Kirk Cousins Lost His Mind on Sideline After Interception vs Bucs
For most of his career, Kirk Cousins has been seen as a nerdy, over-thinker who has struggled with the leadership role that comes with being an NFL quarterback. As his time with the Minnesota Vikings has progressed, however, those narratives are being challenged.
The Vikings went 11-0 in one-score games in 2022 and Kirko Chainz was born. Then, the world saw a much tougher, extremely competitive side of Cousins, when he was featured in “Quarterback”, on Netflix.
Kirk Cousins’ sideline meltdown vs Bucs
On Sunday, we saw that side of the 36-year-old QB again, after he threw an interception at the goal line, just before halftime of Minnesota’s 20-17 loss vs Tampa Bay. The TV broadcast was about to go to commercial when it flipped to a camera shooting Cousins, who was on the sideline absolutely losing his mind on a member of the Vikings staff.
Credit to Paul Rand (Star Tribune) who noticed Kirk’s meltdown while rewatching the game and was kind enough to put it on Twitter for all of us to see.
Missed this at the end of the first half Sunday but Kirk Cousins was VERY frustrated after that goal line INT pic.twitter.com/QrtBMMD2wJ

Every once in awhile, Kirk Cousins does something in public that makes you wonder how hot the competitive fire in his’ belly really burns. Remember, for example, that time he and Mike Zimmer almost dropped gloves after the Vikings hit a GAME-WINNING field goal?
Vikings getting a fired up Kirk in 2023
I’ve watched a lot of high-level sporting events in my 34+ years of life and I’ve participated in plenty of much lower-level competitions, myself. Competitors are competitors and I’ve seen my fair share of sideline/bench/dugout blowups, in my day.
Still, this one is pretty intense. Especially for a guy like Cousins, who cameras rarely catch losing his marbles like he did in the video above. But that doesn’t mean it’s surprising or worrisome. Clearly, someone didn’t do their job properly on that play and it caused an interception. Kirk knew that mistake was going to come back to bite the Vikings, which it did.
Remember, Kirk is on the final year of his current contract. Not only does he desperately want to win a Super Bowl but he has ten’s of millions of dollars at stake every time he drops back in 2023-24.
With the end of his NFL career in sight, we are going to see a different, more vocal style of leadership from Cousins and that’s what we saw with Sunday’s sideline meltdown.
I love it. Give me fired up Kirk Cousins all season. Let’s blow up some narratives.
