Barring Collapse, Marc-Andre Fleury Has No Interest in ‘Bailing’ on Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild have been unbeatable since the All-Star break (4-0), a 2nd half start they needed, to remain in the Western Conference playoff race. The Wild are now 25-23-5 (55 points) and just five points away from the West’s final wildcard spot.

This is positive news for 39-year-old goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who would prefer to stay in Minnesota, as long as they’re contending for a playoff spot, something that was feeling less and less possible leading up to the break.

Marc-Andre Fleury Still Believes in the Minnesota Wild

Wednesday’s victory against the Coyotes may prove to be a pivotal moment for the team’s trajectory moving forward. With Minnesota now within striking distance of a playoff spot, Fleury told Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic) that he’s still confident the Wild will make the postseason and that he’s not going anywhere, as long as they’re still in the conversation.

“Fleury met with his agent, veteran Allan Walsh, this week and discussed the March 8 trade deadline. And where I’m told things stand is that the future Hockey Hall of Fame goalie still believes in the Wild’s chances to make the playoffs and doesn’t want to bail. He’s loyal to his teammates. Always has been.

He would only entertain a trade closer to March 8 if the team falls out of the race. If that were to happen, my sense is he would only consider two or three teams at most — perhaps the likes of the Colorado Avalanche, Maple Leafs or Carolina Hurricanes, if those clubs had interest. As it stands, it’s status quo for Fleury in Minnesota.”

This season, Fleury has posted a 10-9-3 record, with one shutout and rather impressive stats, especially recently. His 2.83 GAA and .902 save percentage are both getting dangerously close to his career averages of 2.59 and .912, respectively.

Fleury is also riding his own four game winning streak. It’s been a season of ups and downs for both Fleury and the team, but there are signs that they’re getting back on track. With 29 games left in the season, we will soon find out if the Wild can build on their recent success and climb further up the standings.
