When the Minnesota Twins placed Royce Lewis on the injured list with a sprain of his lateral collateral ligament, the hope was that he wouldn’t be there for long.

In fact, Royce told reporters that he felt as if he could have played the next day. Instead, however, he and the Twins opted for the cautious approach, and he was placed on the 10-day injured list.

MN Twins to activate Royce Lewis

After spending the weekend in St. Paul, where he hit home runs in consecutive games for the Saints, a source told me today that Royce Lewis will be activated and back in the Minnesota Twins lineup Tuesday, when they open their series in New York against the Mets.

Of course Lewis has had a litany of injuries over the years for the Minnesota Twins. He suffered his knee sprain on April 9th in the final game of a four-game sweep against the Detroit Tigers. Placed on the injured list April 11, retroactive to April 10, he was first eligible to return on April 20. Facing the New York Mets Tuesday, he’ll be active once again.

Royce Lewis started Saturday’s game for St. Paul as the designated hitter and launched a solo shot to left field. He finished the game 1-for-4 with a strikeout. On Sunday he was in the field, and played five innings at third base. He got just three at bats, but made one count by sending a ball way out over the berm.

Twins need Royce to come out swinging

In 12 games for the Twins this season, Lewis has batted .222 and an .822 OPS with two home runs and a pair of doubles. Most notably has been his change in approach at the plate. More patient, he’s rocking a 12/8 K/BB and his 17.8% walk rate is more than double his career average.

It looks to be sustainable as Lewis is chasing just 24.3% of the time, well below his 31.3% last year, or 30.8% career average. His 9.3% whiff rate is also well below the at-least 11.1% he has carried since 2023.

The Minnesota Twins have used Kody Funderburk’s spot for Lewis as he goes on the paternity list.

Derek Shelton will have plenty of new faces in the clubhouse on Tuesday in Queens as Minnesota has also just promoted Kendry Rojas, and Connor Prielipp looks to be on the way for the injured Mick Abel. The 11-11 MN Twins will square off against a 7-15 Mets team that has lost 11 straight.
