Rocco Baldelli is Done With the Data Management Style

Rocco Baldelli has been the Minnesota Twins manager since 2019. Derek Falvey and Thad Levine tabbed him to lead the squad after parting ways with Paul Molitor. It was clear they wanted a progressive thinker, and intended to bring in their own choice.
Because fans grew used to the dated tactics of Terry Ryan (and Bill Smith), analytics remains synonymous with boogeyman in Twins Territory. The reality is that data and information is something that every organization utilizes to try and drive themselves forward.

We may be seeing that Derek Falvey has his hands a bit too far into the daily operations though. Rocco Baldelli shoulders the blame on a nightly basis, but he is pushing back.
New managerial style coming for MN Twins Rocco Baldelli
The style that the Minnesota Twins have played with in recent seasons has largely been reflective of a choice to slug. Whether Rocco Baldelli likes it or not, that’s the roster president Derek Falvey has given him. The leader of Minnesota’s operations on both the baseball and business sides has made no changes. That has forced the skipper to work with what he has.
After a complete gutting of the roster, mandated by an ownership group intent on saving money, Baldelli is finally clear to roll with what he’s has. He’s had enough. Bobby Nightengale of the Star Tribune shared the telling quote following Wednesday night’s loss.
“We’re going to have more guys with the green light going forward, and we’re going to be making a lot of decisions out there on the field using our vision and our awareness. I’d rather play aggressive than passively.”

Finally able to speak with Falvey’s fingers removed from his posterior, Baldelli has a rag-tag bunch of assets that he’s just trying to see what works. While the leader of the front office has proven to be little more than a puppet for ownership, the manager seems done with it.
Of course this could wind up getting him fired. Last season it was the hitting coaches who were the scapegoat. They couldn’t overcome Falvey’s poor roster construction and failed play on the field. Don’t look now, but David Popkins has the Blue Jays owning the second-best offensive fWAR in baseball. They have the highest batting average and slugging percentage while leading the AL East.
Meanwhile Baldelli gets to run players like Mickey Gasper (.394 OPS), Ryan Fitzgerald, Austin Martin, and a group of failed core talents out on a nightly basis. At least he’s now getting to experiment with new things. A slow team is trying to steal bases. A group that can’t bunt has tried to drop them down. A team with nothing to lose is trying to scrape away.

Not surprisingly, a lackluster unit hasn’t been great in their pursuits. A 4-2 extra-inning loss against the Athletics on Wednesday night included a 2-for-15 effort with runners in scoring position, and leaving 12 runners on base.
There’s no denying that the Minnesota Twins aren’t a good baseball team. They now just have a manager who appears to be fed up with it too.
