Carlos Correa Reportedly Plans to Retire After 2028 Season

The Minnesota Twins are playing a doubleheader on Sunday vs the Oakland Athletics, after Saturday’s game was rained out. More than likely, Carlos Correa will be at shortstop for both of today’s contests, just like he has been for nearly every game the MN Twins have played this season, that he’s been healthy.

Outside of a two-week stint on the injured list in mid-April, not only has Correa been available, he’s been the Twins’ best and most consistent player, batting .298 with an .841 OPS and 141 OPS+ and playing an always stellar defensive shortstop.

In 2024, Carlos has already piled up 2.2 WAR and 1.5 WPA (Wins Above Replacement) and leads the Twins in pretty much every offensive category (except Royce Lewis, who has only played 10 games so far this season).

This was the Carlos Correa that the Twins thought they were getting back when they signed him to two of the biggest contracts in organization history. And if he continues to produce like this, while youngsters including Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee and others grow into their own, we should have a lot of playoff games to watch in Twins territory for the next four seasons.

Then in 2028, Correa’s contract becomes much less set in stone (options, vesting, etc, etc). But even then, at just 34 years old, Correa will have a lot of lucrative contract options on the table, whether in Minnesota or elsewhere.

But according to longtime local insider and former MN Twins pitcher, Charley Walters (Pioneer Press), Carlos Correa’s career plans following the 2028 season… are to retire.

Without a doubt, it’s been the best start to a season that Carlos Correa has had in a long time. Correa has been in the MLB for 10 seasons, but thanks to an incredible rise through the Houston Astros organization that started at the age of 18 (1st overall pick in 2012).

But instead of cashing in those additional seasons for more playing time, more Hall of Fame acumen and extra World Series opportunities, Walters is reporting that Correa will trade them out for younger, more youthful years with his family.

At the end of the 2028 season (should he remain healthy), Correa will have compiled 14 years of MLB service time and over $260 million in salary alone. If he were to decide to take his money and go home at 34 instead of 38, more power to him.

Whether or not he plays through the 2028 season with the MN Twins remains to be seen. He has a full no-trade clause on his contract, but that can be waived at any time, should the Twins falter while he is on the roster and he wants to go chase a championship somewhere else.

But for now, we know he and his family love living the Twin Cities area and that he enjoys playing for a Minnesota Twins organization that holds his opinions and wants in high regard. He’s the leader of the team and face of the franchise. So, I’d imagine he is here until 2028. From there, who knows what happens.
