Fans who grew up watching the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1990s-2000s will never forget Kevin Garnett’s impact on the organization. Somehow, this scrawny kid drafted straight out of high school ended up being a franchise savior, making the Timberwolves must-watch television for basketball fans in Minnesota for years to come.

During the peak of his career, KG was undoubtedly one of the best players in basketball, especially on defense. But after years of coming up short of their goals, ‘The Big Ticket’ grew tired of the team’s incompetence, failing to surround the NBA MVP with enough talent to help him reach the NBA Finals. After 14 seasons, the Timberwolves traded Garnett to the Boston Celtics, where they won an NBA Championship in his first year.

For Timberwolves fans, it was hard not to be happy for the best player in franchise history finally reaching the NBA’s pinnacle. Yet, many others wondered why Minnesota could never put together a team capable of winning a championship too. After all, KG was the best player of Boston’s ‘Big 3.’

Garnett, Glen Taylor Feud Rages On…

As much love as Minnesota fans had for Garnett, that love wasn’t always mutual. Garnett has always been vocal about the loyal Timberwolves fans who supported him all along, but when it came to showing love for Glen Taylor, the opposite was true.

Simply put, Garnett hates Taylor. He wants absolutely nothing to do with him and KG has made that very clear over the years. But that doesn’t mean the greatest player in Timberwolves history is avoiding the organization that drafted him out of high school forever.

Now that Taylor is getting closer and closer to finalizing the sale of the Timberwolves to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, Garnett’s heart may be thawing out in regards to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

After nearly eight years away from the Minnesota Timberwolves, he returned thanks to a trade with the Brooklyn Nets involving Thaddeus Young leaving town. It ended up being the final season for Flip Saunders with the Timberwolves. Then, KG stuck around for another year, which was Karl-Anthony Towns’ rookie season. Pairing the two together left an impact on KAT that he still talks about today.

But Garnett retired after the 2015-16 season, and fans of the Timberwolves have been hoping to see him get back involved with the franchise ever since. Especially considering the Celtics retired KG’s No. 5 jersey back in 2020. Now, when you go to TD Garden, fans can see Garnett’s jersey hanging from the rafters.

Yet, when you visit the Target Center, you won’t find Garnett’s iconic No. 21 jersey anywhere but in the stands, on the backs of thousands of Timberwolves fans eager to see KG forever memorialized in the rafters. But because of his hatred for Taylor, Garnett has mostly avoided Target Center since he left the second time and refuses such ceremonies.

But according to ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, Kevin Garnett and pending majority owners Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore, have bigger plans for KG’s future involvement in the organization than just putting his jersey in the Target Center rafters. They want him to take an active role in the organization, a role that Windhorst did not detail.

“Assuming the transaction is finalized, there is a chance Garnett will take a role with the organization, sources told ESPN. He has been in a bitter dispute with Taylor and distant from the franchise in recent years.”

That’s it. That’s all we have from Windhorst on this monumental decision from Garnett. There’s no indication of what type of role he may consider, how soon he’d be willing to join the Timberwolves, or the status of his long-awaited jersey retirement. Yet, if there’s one thing we already know, it’s that Wolves fans everywhere would welcome Garnett embracing any kind of role with the organization he essentially helped become what it is today.
