While injuries have been public enemy No. 1 for this team all year, they are now fully healthy in the middle of their round one 2025 NHL Playoffs series vs the Vegas Golden Knights.

Before the NHL Trade Deadline, general manager Bill Guerin decided not to put injured stars Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek on Long Term Injured Reserve. That left little to no wiggle room to add additional talent before the deadline. Now that both players are back in the lineup, it looks like the right move.

Jonas Brodin Expected to Miss Significant Time with Upper Body Injury https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/jonas-brodin-upper-body-injury-evander-kane/ Sun, 10 Dec 2023 00:35:06 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=45571 Jonas Brodin may or may not have been subject to an Evander Kane dirty hit Friday night during a game the Minnesota Wild eventually lost 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers. What constitutes a dirty hit is up for discussion, apparently.

NHL turns blind eye to Evander Kane hit on Jonas Brodin

You be the judge. The first video below is Kane’s hit on Brodin, which got Evander Kane a phone call from league offices, but ultimately no suspension or fine. The video immediately below it is an arguably similar hit from from 2022 in which the aggressor was tagged with a 5-minute penalty and 1-game suspension.

Brodin to miss significant time with upper-body injury

Anyway, crying over Brodin’s illegally spilled blood won’t get him on the ice any faster. And that’s where the bad news comes in. While Kane’s hit on Brodin may not have netted him a fine or suspension, it is going to land the Minnesota Wild defenseman in the press box for the foreseeable future.

On Saturday evening, Michael Russo (The Athletic) is reporting that Jonas Brodin will “miss significant time” due to an upper-body injury he suffered thanks to Kane’s totally not illegal hit.

Ryan Hartman Suspended Two Games for Slew Foot on Alex DeBrincat https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/wild-ryan-hartman-suspended-slew-foot-alex-debrincat/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 23:59:41 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=45250 The NHL announced on Monday that it has suspended Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman two games for this slew foot on Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat.

Ryan Hartman suspension comes amidst difficult Minnesota Wild news day

Coincidentally, the suspension announcement came just minutes after news broke that the president of hockey operations, Bill Guerin, had fired Dean Evason and already hired his new man, John Hynes.

Related: The Minnesota Wild Suck and Bill Guerin Has Nobody to Blame but Himself

Hartman’s suspension is not a surprise because he is a repeat offender on the list of dirty hitters. In fact, some might say it is a bit surprising he only got two games.

Ryan is one of many Wild players who are not playing up to par, especially after he signed a three-year contract extension this offseason that has him in Minnesota through 2026-27.

NHL Projection Models Love the Minnesota Wild https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/nhl-projection-models-love-the-minnesota-wild/ Sat, 08 Oct 2022 21:30:26 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=40642 The 2022-23 Minnesota Wild regular season starts on Thursday vs the New York Rangers. They enter with a lot of the same faces but a couple of notable changes. Kevin Fiala, the team’s second-leading goal scorer last season, was traded to the LA Kings. Cam Talbot is out too, after he refused to share net-minding duties with Marc-Andre Fleury.

And it’s those two offseason moves, along with concern up the middle, that have many Wild fans nervous about the upcoming season. For good reason, too. Losing an 80-point scorer entering his prime and trusting a declining 38-year-old goalie are both worthy concerns.

Projection Models Love Wild

Unless you ask all of the NHL projection models on the internet. Models from Evolving Hockey, The Athletic and FiveThirtyEight.com all have the Minnesota Wild as a playoff team and the class of the Central Division, right behind Colorado.

They point to the emergence of Matt Boldy and Marco Rossi as major contributors to the Wild’s projected success. But really, the analytical optimism in these models stems from rising superstar Kirill Kaprizov. FiveThirtyEight.com is least optimistic (100 points, 76% playoff odds) but didn’t have any explanations to go with their projections.

The Athletic and Evolving Hockey are more bullish about the 2022-23 Wild, putting their playoff odds at over 90%.

FiveThirtyEight: 100 Points | Playoffs: 76% | NHL: 10th | Central: 3rd

The Athletic: 105.5 Points | Playoffs: 94% | NHL: 5th | Central: 2nd

And so that means the most optimistic projection yet for the Wild: 106 points and a one-in-10 shot at winning it all. It’s a massive jump from last year’s 97.8-point projection and that’s because the model wanted to see the Wild repeat the magic from Kaprizov’s rookie season. They did, finishing fifth in the league with 113 points. In the Kaprizov era, the Wild have played at a 112-point pace — they deserve a lofty point projection.

Evolving Hockey: 104 Points | Playoffs: 93% | NHL: 8th | Central: 2nd

Minnesota baby, right? With the continued improvement of Kirill Kaprizov, the out-of-nowhere surge in Ryan Hartman’s production, and young talents in Matt Boldy and Marco Rossi, the Wild are still projected to be an easy lock for the playoffs. And while their defensemen group isn’t what is used to be, Jared Spurgeon has so far shown no signs of aging, and Calen Addison is nice upgrade over Jordie Benn. Poor Arizona.

Wild’s Hopes Dashed Again as they Fail to Land Top Pick in Draft Lottery https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/wilds-hopes-dashed-again-as-they-fail-to-land-top-pick-in-draft-lottery/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/wilds-hopes-dashed-again-as-they-fail-to-land-top-pick-in-draft-lottery/#respond Mon, 10 Aug 2020 22:21:15 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=28577

The Minnesota Wild saw their season end on Friday against Vancouver in the qualifying round of the NHL Playoffs. Tonight they found out their slot in the NHL draft. The Wild entered the night with a 12.5% chance of landing the top pick and a chance to draft consensus top pick Alexis Lafreniere. But as things typically work out for Minnesota teams they ended up picking ninth. The New York Rangers ended up winning the draft lottery.

At ninth the Wild get into the top 10 for the first time since 2012 when they selected Matt Dumba. They are looking for a second impact player this offseason after finally being able to get Kirill Kaprizov over from Russia. With Kaprozov and emerging superstar Kevin Fiala, the Wild look to have a bright future ahead of them. The job now falls to general manager Bill Guerin to further mold the roster.
