Vegas Believes in Vikings Rookie Dallas Turner
Dallas Turner was the 17th pick taken in the 2024 NFL Draft. While he wasn’t the first Minnesota Vikings draft pick, back in April, he is the only 2024 1st round pick on the active roster this season.
That means, Dallas will get a chance do many things, during his first year of being a professional football player, that JJ McCarthy will not. Like win the 2024 NFL Rookie of the Year award.
Oddsmakers believe Dallas Turner for NFL Rookie of the Year
Prior to his injury, McCarthy was one of the favorites to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Now, that is no longer possible. But the Vikings’ other first rounder is still very much in the running for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
As of Monday morning, Turner is tied for the best odds available at BetMGM (+400). He has the 2nd-best odds, behind Laiatu Latu (Colts), at DraftKings (+450) and FanDuel (+440).
Sportsbook | Dallas Turner DROY Odds | Rank |
---|---|---|
BetMGM | +400 | T-Best (Latu) |
FanDuel | +440 | 2nd (Latu) |
DraftKings | +450 | 2nd (Latu) |
I continue to be surprised at the love that Dallas Turner is getting from NFL experts and oddsmakers. Yes, he is talented and he will get opportunities, as a rookie. But he’s not a starter, so those chances will be somewhat limited.
The Minnesota Vikings will start Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel at their EDGE (OLB) positions. More than likely, Turner will spend the first snaps of his NFL career on the sideline. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores plans to use him creatively, especially on passing downs.

Would you bet on it the Minnesota Vikings rookie?
Unless one of two Vikings OLB starters end up injured, or the young phenom out of Alabama passes them on the depth chart, it could be difficult to pull in the kind of numbers (tackles, sacks, TFLs) he’ll need to be in the running for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, when all the 2024 NFL dust settles.
No doubt, Dallas Turner has rookie year type talent, if he can find find the field often enough. Many had the 21-year-old Turner tagged as the best defensive player in the draft. The fact he slipped all the way to No. 17 shocked many around the draft community.

Turner landed at Alabama as the No. 9 ranked recruit in the country (247Sports), in 2021. How good was he? Dallas played in 10 games for the Crimson Tide, as a freshman, racking up 8.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss, facing some of the best offensive tackles in the country.
After a down 2022, Dallas Turner responded with 53 tackles, 10 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss, during his final season in Tuscaloosa. He’ll need to reach close to those sack numbers with the Minnesota Vikings, as a rookie, if he wants to payoff those betting on him to win DROY in 2024.
