Right now the Minnesota Vikings employ one of the best tight ends across football. There was a noticeable hole in the offense while T.J. Hockenson was out. His return has provided another weapon for Sam Darnold to utilize. Before Hockenson though, there was hope the organization could develop someone of that ilk.

Vikings project Irv Smith Jr. surfaces again

The Vikings used a second round pick on Irv Smith Jr. during the 2019 NFL Draft. He looked like a dynamic offensive threat coming out of Alabama. That never translated as he couldn’t stay healthy. He has since moved on, but is joining the Houston Texans this weekend.

Smith played in 37 games for the Vikings. He caught 91 passes for 858 yards and nine touchdowns. When he went down injured in 2022, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah pulled the trigger to acquire Hockenson from the Detroit Lions.

Last season Smith Jr. played for the Bengals but failed to make much of an impact. He had just 115 yards and a touchdown across 12 games. He has bounced between the active roster and practice squad for Houston this year. In two games, he has not shown up in the box score.

The Texans play Kansas City Saturday afternoon and are looking to stay connected to postseason opportunity. They’ll get a version of Patrick Mahomes that could be at less than 100%.

It remains to be seen as to whether C.J. Stroud will utilize his newly elevated tight end of not. Thus far Smith Jr.’s career has largely been one of what if.
