The Minnesota Vikings signed former Washington Redskins wide receiver, Josh Doctson on Sunday in a bit of a surprise manuever. Doctson was drafted one pick before the Vikings took Laquon Treadwell in 2016, their biggest WR bust since Troy Williamson. In ironic fashion, the Vikings released Laquon Treadwell on Saturday when cutting their roster down to 53, just one day before picking up Josh.

Our new WR out of TCU had some injury problems early in his NFL career, for sure. He played just two games in his rookie season, due to Achilles Tendonitis in both of his legs but he’s been a lot healthier the past two seasons. He only missed one of Washington’s last 32 games, but still, he never blossomed into the superstar they drafted him to be.

An interesting factor that comes into play, with Doctson coming to town: he played with Kirk Cousins when they were both in D.C. His best season actually came with Cousins as his QB in 2017, when he posted 35 Rec, 502 Yds, and 6 Tds. This is now the second year in a row the Vikings have brought in a receiver that Cousins was familiar with, Aldrick Robinson being the receiver last year. Whether this is a security blanket for Cousins or it is a coincidence, it is worth noting.

The Vikings hope that Doctson becomes the outside receiver he was supposed to be coming out of TCU, which would slide Adam Thielen back into the slot where he simply dominates. When all is said and done, this seems to be a very low-risk/high-reward signing for the Vikings.
