For a team that did not make the playoffs, the Minnesota Vikings have been feeding us news from all angles early this offseason. Their current defensive coaches are all over the coaching carousel, as are their former offensive assistants.

Meanwhile, reporters are trying to figure out how Kwesi & Co. are planning to fix the QB room, the secondary and a multitude of other weaknesses, as they prepare for the start of free agency in March.

And for the “off-field incident” portion of the offseason news cycle, that has been all wide receiver Jordan Addison. But on Wednesday, he’s landed in the news for a much different (but related) reason.

San Francisco 49ers coming for Jordan Addison?

According to 49ers reporter Grant Cohn (SI/Fan Nation), San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch are trying to strike a deal with the Minnesota Vikings for wide receiver Jordan Addison.

From what Cohn is being told, the MN Vikings do NOT plan on picking up Addison’s fifth-year option, and thus are open to trading the Bay Area native back closer to home… or elsewhere.

“Here’s a juicy rumor for you. According to a source, the 49ers intend to be quite aggressive this offseason in terms of trades. They want to trade up in the draft and they want to trade for a wide receiver.

And the wide receiver they’re initially targeting in a trade is Jordan Addison of the Minnesota Vikings. Jordan Addison is entering year four in the NFL and the Vikings apparently don’t want to pick up his fifth-year option.

They like Jalen Naylor… They’d like to keep him. And since they’re not going to pick up Jordan Addison’s fifth-year option, they would be open to trading [Addison].”

Grant Cohn (SI-49ers)

Trading Addison right now would make sense in some ways for the Minnesota Vikings. In other ways, it may not. Obviously, you start the conversation on Jordan, with the fact that the 2023 No. 23 overall pick was arrested YET AGAIN recently.

This time, the 23-year-old was booked for reportedly refusing to leave the Hard Rock Noodle Bar in Tampa, FL at 3:45 a.m.. His charges were dropped on Tuesday, however, and Addison now plans to file a wrongful arrest suit, according to his lawyers.

Now, the Minnesota Vikings must decide before May 5 whether or not they will trigger the fifth-year extension on Jordan Addison’s rookie contract — following 175 receptions, 2,396 yards and 22 touchdowns through his first three seasons (46 games).

Normally, that would be a standard procedural move for any successful first round draft pick on the field, like Addison — who doesn’t have his laundry list of off-field incidents.

Other teams tapping MN Vikings on Addison + possible trade value

Cohn reports that talks between Minnesota and San Francisco have already taken place. Sure enough, he believes a second or third round pick could be enough to get the Vikings to bite on an Addison trade.

He even floats Ricky Pearsall and a 4th round pick. But even more intriguing that possible Jordan Addison return packages, are more teams who could have interest… including the Buffalo Bills, who the Vikings partnered with to offload Stefon Diggs for a first round pick.

So apparently, from what I heard, there have already been initial discussions between the two teams on a trade. I don’t know if the Niners have made an offer. I don’t know if they’ll ultimately get him, because other teams are probably going to want him.

I’m hearing Buffalo is the team that also would like Jordan Addison. Remember, they traded with the Vikings a few years ago for Stefon Diggs. So there’s a history between those two teams.

But keep an eye on the 49ers making a play for Jordan Addison. He’s 23 years old. He was a first-round pick. He’s two years younger than Ricky Pearsall. He’s really, really, really, really, really good.

And they probably could get him for like maybe a second, maybe a third. Maybe Ricky Pearsall. Maybe Ricky Pearsall and a fourth. Something to watch for…

Grant Cohn (SI-49ers)

The Vikings can’t trust Jordan Addison, so cutting bait with him now wouldn’t offend anyone. At the same time, you would be selling him when his stock is at an all-time low.

Despite Cohn’s reporting, I’d still be surprised if the Minnesota Vikings do not pick up Addison’s option, if he is on the team, come May 5. Even if they do not plan to keep him, he’s too valuable of an asset, even if he can’t stay out of trouble.

Should the Niners really want to woo the Vikings into dealing Addison, they’ll put Mac Jones on the table — even though they claim his is not available for trade.
