Minnesota Twins Trade Cash for Pitching Help

The Minnesota Twins won tonight — a 9-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox that snapped a five-game losing streak threatening to kill a season that prior, was going surprisingly well.

Now 28-33, the Twins will look to start a new kind of streak at home on Tuesday, while simultaneously looking to take their three game set against the same division rival that beat them in three out of four games last week.

In other news, Minnesota’s pitching staff is getting healthier. Cole Sands is about to start a rehab assignment. Bailey Ober is throwing off a mound again. And in possibly the most exciting news of the day, so are youngsters Mick Abel and Kenry Rojas.

But the MN Twins weren’t done for the day when their game came to a close at Target Field. After the game, news broke that GM Jeremy Zoll and the front office completed a trade, sending cash consideration to Pittsburgh in exchange for 31-year-old reliever Justin Lawrence.

Justin Lawrence has plenty of big league experience, racking up over three years of MLB service time over the last six seasons. His best full season was 2023, when he posted a 3.72 ERA and 3.76 FIP in 75 innings. Most impressively, that was out of the Colorado bullpen.

What are Twins getting in Justin Lawrence

Last season, Lawrence had his best short-term stint in the league, posting a 0.51 ERA and 0.962 WHIP in 17.2 innings pitched out of the Pirates bullpen. Unfortunately, things have not gone as well this year, as the 2015 12th round draft pick has a 5.32 ERA and 1.545 in 22 innings (23 appearances).

But, the Minnesota Twins need bodies in their bullpen. Given Justin Lawrence’s big league experience, this seems like a pretty good get when all they had to give up was cash considerations.
