The Minnesota Twins fell short of a sweep against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday afternoon. Still, their series victory has them only two games under .500 (46-48), with baseball’s worst team, the Los Angeles Angels in town for the weekend.

Tom Pohlad wants his team to be in a spot where they can add before the trade deadline. If that is going to be the case following the All-Star break, they’ll need to continue stacking wins.

Thankfully, the Twins are getting Ryan Jeffers back. If he can play at the All-Star level he was at before breaking his hamate bone, it will go a long way toward helping Derek Shelton’s squad continue stacking wins.

Ryan Jeffers returning to Minnesota Twins lineup

How exactly the Minnesota Twins would add Ryan Jeffers back the 26-man roster seemed somewhat of a mystery. They can’t send Alex Jackson down without exposing him to waivers, so they’ll carry three catchers on the squad for the time being instead.

53 days after initially suffering the hamate injury, the Twins will get their catcher back. Jeffers will immediately slot back in as the top option behind the plate, carrying a career-best .295 batting average and .949 OPS. Given that he is in his last season of team control, the breakout has come at a great time.

If Jeffers returns at that level, he will undoubtedly draw more interest both at the deadline and over the offseason. He can certainly help the Minnesota Twins in their playoff push, but he may also be their best asset to return other necessary pieces to round out the roster.

Minnesota can showcase Jeffers between now and the August 3 trade deadline, then decide whether any offer is strong enough to move him. Should he be kept through the rest of the year, he would be a candidate to receive a qualifying offer, but that may leave the Twins on the hook for roughly $23 million next season.

To make room for Jeffers on the roster, Minnesota optioned Kyler Fedko. The late-blooming prospect earned a promotion after posting a .950 OPS in 58 games at Triple-A this year. Unfortunately he has gone 0-for-16 with eight strikeouts and two walks through his first 14 big league games, and will be looking to erase the 0-fer at some point later this season.
