During Grapefruit League action down in Fort Myers, Minnesota Twins fans got a look at top prospect Luke Keaschall. Despite undergoing Tommy John surgery last season, he put together an incredible 2024 down on the farm and was ready to rock physically in Spring Training.

Minnesota put him on a recovery plan to start the year, in order to protect the young infielder/outfielder’s throwing elbow. Keaschall never really stood a chance to make the Opening Day roster. Instead, he started 2025 with the St. Paul Saints and just recently graduated to playing a full nine innings in the field.

Luke Keaschall to make his Minnesota Twins debut

A consensus top 100 prospect, Luke Keaschall has played 14 games for the St. Paul Saints this season, while the big league club got off to an ugly 7-12 start. Now, a recent run on infielder injuries means Keaschall is getting the call for this weekend’s series in Atlanta.

Down at Triple-A so far this season, Keaschall owns a .261/.379/.348 slash line, which includes a double and home run for the Saints. When Keaschall takes the field for his major league debut, it will likely be at second base.

He has not yet graduated to playing the outfield, due to his surgery. Last season, Keaschall appeared in the outfield 16 times in the minor leagues. Minnesota has been cautious about over-exerting his elbow, but they don’t have a choice but to promote him, at this point.

On Wednesday, during their extra-inning victory against the New York Mets, Rocco Baldelli was forced to pinch hit Mickey Gasper for Willi Castro. It was revealed postgame that the utility infielder suffered an oblique injury. He is a likely candidate for the injured list. I’d expect Keaschall to assume the starting second base position, for now.

A former second round pick, Keaschall is a capable fielder. He has decent arm strength on the dirt and he’s hit at every level. In 2023, he split time between Single and Double-A, posting a .303/.420/.482 slash line.

MN Twins have a new on-base machine

He’s not a traditional power bat, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have pop. A product of Arizona State, Keaschall may be the shot in the arm this Twins team needs to turn the corner, if he can hit out of the gate. They are coming off a series win against the Mets, and Atlanta has scuffled to the tune of a 5-13 record, out of the gate.

Keaschall’s greater asset is his ability to get on base. He posted a .420 on-base percentage last season and owns a .415 on-base percentage across 148 minor league games. Keaschall is just 22 years old, and while some of it is out of necessity, the Twins have certainly fast-tracked their young star.

Last year when Minnesota called the Chicago White Sox about trading for Erick Fedde, the Southsiders asked for Keaschall. That probably got a chuckle out of Derek Falvey after he immediately hung up the phone, and now he’s ready to deploy the talent on the division.

Keaschall has an advanced approached at the dish and owns a 116/90 K/BB across his minor league tenure. He bats from the right side and gives manager Rocco Baldelli another top-of-the-order option if he so chooses.

It remains to be seen how Keaschall will acclimate to the highest level, but he has now made it. If he can replicate the .814 OPS from 12 Grapefruit League games than you can bet both the player and his team will be happy.
