To Whom It May Concern: Good Luck Prying Joe Ryan Out of Minnesota

There are just 10 games left until the Major League Baseball trade deadline. The Minnesota Twins went into the All-Star Break at 47-49. Opposing teams are expecting them to sell. What extent that may be right is yet to be seen.

If the players in Rocco Baldelli’s clubhouse wanted reinforcements then dropping two straight against the Colorado Rockies wasn’t the way to open the second half. They’d need to go 7-3 to close the month if they are going to end July at .500.

It’s one thing for Derek Falvey to part with veterans on one-year deals. It’s another for him to move top-tier relievers, or All-Star starting pitcher Joe Ryan.

Minnesota Twins uninterested in trading Joe Ryan

While it Atlanta for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game Joe Ryan said the idea of being involved in a trade would be “exciting.” That at least suggests he would be open to the idea, but thankfully it’s not up to him. USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale doesn’t see the move happening either.

“The Twins will listen to offers, but are expected to keep starter Joe Ryan.”

It shouldn’t be a surprise that a starting pitcher with a 2.72 ERA (3.21 FIP) would draw trade interest. Joe Ryan is having the best season of his career, and he has accumulated 121 strikeouts across 109 1/3 innings. At 29 years old, he has been dominant after missing the end of last season with a teres major strain. That’s the same injury Pablo Lopez is currently dealing with.

Just because there is interest doesn’t mean the Minnesota Twins should meet the demand. Ryan is under team control through 2027, and while it’s possible he could get expensive in arbitration, his 2025 salary is just $3 million. If the Twins want to reload next year, then keeping a top arm to pair with Lopez makes a ton of sense.

It stands to reason that Minnesota would get trade calls in droves if they made it known Ryan was available. To what extent the return was logical though is something that would need to blow them away.

Joe Ryan would command a ridiculous haul for MN Twins

There have been rumblings that a team like the Boston Red Sox could have interest in adding Ryan to their rotation. They have the firepower to get a deal done, but a move like that starts with Roman Anthony and/or Marcelo Mayer.

Minnesota landed two 100 prospects in Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson for Jose Berrios. Berrios never once posted a season like Ryan prior to being dealt, and although he’s a couple years younger, the market remains relatively the same.

Any organization calling the Twins about Ryan should be willing to give up controllable, and already contributing, big league talent. If that’s not where they’re going to start, then multiple top prospects would have to fill out the package.

Joe Ryan if moved, probably represents the best player that swaps teams this year. That would be disappointing for Twins fans both now and next year, even if the return is a massive one.
