Division Rival Hires Pair of Former Twins Coaches

The Minnesota Twins fell apart to the tune of a 70-92 record last season. It cost Rocco Baldelli his job and ultimately had Derek Falvey and Jeremy Zoll picking former bench coach Derek Shelton as the next man in charge.
He still has to sort out his coaching staff, and the hitting coach has been one of the most polarizing roles in recent seasons. David Popkins and Derek Shomon were fired at the end of last season. Matt Borgschulte was brought in to turn things around. That didn’t exactly happen, and Popkins took his new team to the World Series. Now Shomon is back in the division for his next job as well.
Derek Shomon hired as new White Sox hitting coach
Last season Derek Shomon worked with the Miami Marlins as an assistant hitting coach. Now he’s back in the division as the lead guy for the Chicago White Sox.

The role is a homecoming for Shomon. He’s an Illinois native and started his coaching career with the Schaumburg Boomers. He began coaching in affiliated ball during 2021 with the Twins. By 2023 he moved up to the major league staff as an assistant, and held that role through 2024.
He’ll return to a division he knows well, and he’ll have his hands full with a Chicago White Sox team that won just 60 games last season. They are looking to turn things around, and Shomon can be a catalyst for that change.
Zach Bove named pitching coach for White Sox
In recent seasons the Minnesota Twins have looked to hire talent from all over the place. He was hired by the organization in 2019 and helped to develop former first round pick Nate Pearson at Central Florida.
Bove is a very analytically driven coach and brought the Twins lightyears forward with his implementation of biomechanics in pitching practices. Since 2023 Bove has worked with the Kansas City Royals as an assistant pitching coach.
This is the first time that Bove will operate as a major league pitching coach. He joins Shomon as new members of manager Will Venable’s staff.
