Byron Buxton Spells It Out Again: He’s Not Leaving Minnesota

The Minnesota Twins haven’t been .500 since April 21. And when they return from the All-Star break on Friday at Wrigley Field, they’ll still be one game short, at 48-49.

Yet, the Twins will enter the second half with their heads held high. They’ve won eight of their last nine series and nine of their last thirteen games, bringing them within a half-game of a Wild Card spot in the American League.

Now, if Minnesota can carry its late first-half momentum into Chicago this weekend and beat up the 54-42 Cubs (like they did the Yankees last week) it could put them on track to defy all preseason odds and actually be buyers at the MLB trade deadline.

That’s what those throughout the organization have been hinting at recently. Of course, it’s also possible the Twins stumble over the next two weeks, leading up to the August 3 deadline, and wind up sellers again.

Either way, superstar Byron Buxton — who won’t play in the All-Star Game due to a nagging hip injury — made it clear yet again over the weekend (to anyone across the league who might still be wondering) that he’s not leaving Minnesota, reminding Bobby Nightengale (Star Tribune) that, while he may not be “One of Us,” his kids are.

After both Tom Pohlad and GM Jeremy Zoll came out recently and confirmed that the Twins are not interested in trading Byron Buxton, he doubled down on his commitment to the organization Sunday, vowing that he and the Twins are in this together.

“I have that peace of mind. My family, Minnesota is home for us. That’s where we want to be. That’s where they want to be. And that’s something that is not going to change. We done built our family up, two more kids now from Minnesota since I’ve been here. This is all they know, too.”

“We all have to be in this together. That’s basically why I’m letting you know: I’m here. I’m in this. I ain’t with the, ‘Oh, Buck might do this.’ No, I let you know, so you take that off your plate. You know what Buck is doing, so there ain’t no confusion.”

This isn’t the first time Byron Buxton has rebuffed the thought of being traded out of the Minnesota Twins organization. He did the same this time last year, at the 2025 All-Star Game, and then again just a couple of weeks ago, after his name started cropping up in early trade deadline rumors.

Pretty much, since the moment Buck received his no-trade clause, as part of an 7-year, $100 million contract back in 2022, he’s been steadfast in saying that the only way he is leaving the Twins is if they essentially push him out.

Buxton only wants to play for Minnesota Twins… like ever.

While the Pohlads have gotten close to doing exactly that in the past, they’ve made it clear recently that the 32-year-old superstar — who is batting .271 with 25 home runs and a .904 OPS this season — is welcomed to stick around as long as he would like to. Sorry Philly (no I’m not)…

Buxton’s current contract only runs through 2028. However, during his chat with Nightengale, Byron made no bones about his desire to wear a Minnesota Twins uniform until he hangs up his MLB spikes for good, just like Joe Mauer did here before him, and like Clayton Kershaw did with the Dodgers.

“I was like, ‘Dang, bro, the only thing you know is blue and white, ain’t it?’” Buxton said. “He was like, ‘Love it.’ Just to see his reaction, though, I was like, ‘That’s going to be me.’

“We’re blessed already to be able to play baseball, but to be able to do it with one team, and make your legacy there, that’s what makes it special. It’s somewhere you can always call home no matter what.”
