The regular season is quickly coming to a close for the Minnesota Twins and then they will head home. The postseason went out the window a long time ago for the big league club this season.

On the farm though, High-A Cedar Rapids is currently in a first-round series, and Double-A Wichita is fighting for their postseason lives too. Most prospects will begin their offseason routines in the next couple of weeks. Some though, will head to the Arizona Fall League to face extended and heightened competion.

Minnesota is sending three of their top 30 prospects. Among them is Hendry Mendez, who has put on a show since being acquired in exchange for Harrison Bader.

Peoria Javelinas receive eight Minnesota Twins prospects

The Arizona Fall League gives prospects an extended time to compete against some of the best farm talent in the league. The season starts on October 6 and runs through November 15. Minnesota will send eight players to represent the organization as part of the Peoria Javelinas.

Winokur and Amick are the top prospects included in the group, but Mendez may currently be the most exciting. Recently The Athletic’s Dan Hayes wrote about Mendez and the Twins desire to move him around the diamond.

He has yet to play it in a game, but the Twins are working out prospect Hendry Mendez at first base to see if a position change is a viable way of getting his bat in the lineup.

The Twins really like Mendez’s bat and the way he’s responded after coming over in a July 31 trade that sent Harrison Bader to Philadelphia. But with an already-crowded outfield and Mendez struggling some defensively in the whipping winds of Wichita, the Twins recently started exploring whether he could handle first base.

“It’s a way to hopefully keep his bat in lineup and see how he plays first base,” Brian Dinkelman said. “He has a good idea of what the strike zone is and doesn’t chase too much. He takes a walk for us and he’s been good for us at the place so far since we’ve had him.”

Through his first 28 games in the Twins system, Mendez owns a .316/.436/.421 batting line. The 21-year-old has ten homers in 113 total Double-A games this season and has only struck out one more time (61) than he has walked (60).

Winokur was taken two rounds after Minnesota grabbed Walker Jenkins. He’s a toolsy prospect that is still coming into his own. He can play all of the premium positions and has leaned into his power. Across 122 games at High-A, while just 20 years old, Winokur has hit .226/.304/.388 with 17 homers and 26 stolen bases.

Last year Amick was Minnesota’s second round pick out of Tennessee. Son of Nascar driver Lyndon Amick, Billy was seen as a corner power hitter. He had 23 home runs in 65 games with the Volunteers during his final season. He has hit for average (.307) this season, but there is a lot of swing and miss (70/33 K/BB) and the power hasn’t yet shown up (4 HR).

Among the other names, Dylan Questad is one to watch as well. The Wisconsin-native was a prep pick and will be 21 in November. He has racked up a bunch of strikeouts (122) across his 103 minor league innings, but the command has been a problem (91 walks).

The Fall League gives these players additional developmental opportunity and time to work with top coaches. It can also help springboard opportunity come Spring Training next season. Minnesota recently sent both Kala’i Rosario and Aaron Sabato to the Arizona Fall League. Both are having breakout seasons this year.
