When Will MN Timberwolves Trades Become Official?

It feels like the Minnesota Timberwolves offseason came to a complete halt the past couple weeks, once it became apparent that the Wolves were on the list of teams being considered as LeBron James’ next landing spot.

Maybe that’s why the Wolves’ first Summer League game snuck up on us so quickly?

That’s right, if you pull your Amazon Prime app up this afternoon around 2:30 p.m. CDT, you can watch the future frontcourt duo of Joan Beringer and Rocco Zikarsky take the court in Las Vegas against the New Orleans Pelicans in their first Summer League game of 2026.

In theory, basketball activities in Las Vegas will be held following one of the busiest offseasons in MN Timberwolves history. President of basketball operations, Tim Connelly, has handshake agreements in place that sent Julius Randle to Brooklyn and Naz Reid to Charlotte.

In return, the Wolves hope they have Anthony Edwards’ backcourt partner of the future, in Lonzo Ball, who was drafted one pick behind Ant in the 2020 NBA Draft. But here’s the thing. Neither of the trades mentioned above are official yet, which is why there hasn’t been an introductory press conference for LaMelo in Minnesota.

Timberwolves trades CAN become official… today?

But when will we see the youngest Ball brother — who averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game last season — hold up a Timberwolves jersey and take questions from reporters at Mayo Clinic Square in downtown Minneapolis? Soon.

In fact, it’s possible we see both the Julius Randle and Naz Reid for LaMelo Ball trades become official Thursday. Why, because Mouhamadou Gueye — who is coming to Minnesota in the Randle to Brooklyn trade — wasn’t tradeable until today, according to Darren Wolfson (SKOR North).

“So, Chicago is part of this trade going back to the Julius Randle agreement… with Brooklyn, with Chicago. Now, we know Charlotte is going to be part of this transaction, there was a player by the name of Mo Gueye going from Chicago here to Minnesota.

He has a non-guaranteed contract, but he signed that contract on April 9th. He is not trade eligible until three months after signing said deal. So three months would be July 9th, which is Thursday.

I’m not suggesting that we’ll have official news on Thursday. Maybe it takes a bit longer, but this transaction can’t take place because of the Mo Gueye contract until minimum Thursday.”

The trade that lands LaMelo Ball in Minnesota will probably include 6-7 teams, when the dust settles. Among them will be the Hornets and Bulls. In other words, Naz and Julius will go to their new teams and LaMelo will land here as part of one super trade.

Wolfson: Trade CAN happen now… but probably won’t

So, now that it’s Thursday and Gueye is eligible to be traded, we could see the deal officially announced at any moment, right? And shortly after, our new 24-year-old point guard (25 next month) will be introduced… like maybe even this weekend?

Not so fast, says Wolfson, who is getting a sense behind the scenes that some of the finer details of this massive trade are yet to be worked out.

“It could bleed past Thursday, but like we can’t have news of this big transaction today or tomorrow. Put it that way. Jud, I also got an answer to your inquiry from last Thursday. Yeah. At least the idea is not a LaMelo Ball press conference in Las Vegas during summer league.

The idea is to introduce him here in Minneapolis. I would say there’s some fluidity to that, but right now there isn’t a plan for a LaMelo Ball press conference in Las Vegas.

So, we might be looking at past summer league. Summer League goes until what? July 19th. So we might be looking at the week of July 20th at the earliest for some sort of LaMelo Ball introduction here in Minneapolis.”

Darren made it very clear that the LaMelo Ball trade is not in any sort of danger of collapsing.

He will eventually get here, just like Reid and Randle will eventually be gone. But if you are holding your breath waiting for Ball’s intro press conference… maybe breath. It could be a couple of weeks still, before that happens.
