Vikings Owners Emerge as “Serious Candidates” for Timberwolves Purchase

Would you look at that? Just after Kevin Garnett blew up your phone with rumors he was a part of the group to buy the Timberwolves from Glen Taylor, another challenger entered the ring. Or should I say court? According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Wilf family has emerged as serious contenders to purchase the middling NBA franchise.

If you don’t know who the Wilfs are, which every Minnesotan should, they are the current owners of the Minnesota Vikings. They have owned the team since 2005.

This would be a MASSIVE move for not only the Wilfs, but also Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor. This would allow the Wilfs to become an even more dominant player in the Minnesota sports scene. While it would be a massive F-YOU to Garnett from Taylor.

THE RIGHT FIT

This isn’t the first time the Wilfs have tried to diversify their sports portfolio. They previously tried to lure Major League Soccer to Minnesota back in 2017. Although they failed then (losing out to Minnesota United and Bil McGuire), they teamed up to be owners of the new Nashville franchise.

Personally, this is the perfect fit for the Timberwolves. Yes, you can say having a player be a part-owner is better, but Garnett likely has minimal business acumen and would solely be a figurehead for the organization.

With the Wilfs at the helm instead, the Timberwolves could see a massive boost in everything from spending to fan experience to plain old competence in ownership. Since their purchase of the Vikings, they have become a force of nature. They pushed the Minnesota State Legislature to build U.S. Bank Stadium while also building new facilities and building one of the best front offices in the sport.

You may think that Taylor has compared favorably. He built the Mayo Clinic Square training facility, upgraded Target Center, and hired some decent front office minds. But with the Wilfs leading the way over Garnett and his team, you have a more solidified understanding of what to expect.

Excellence.

Don’t even get me started on whether the Wilf’s would already be a part of Garnett’s bid or allow him to join if they become frontrunners. The Wilfs are lone-wolves (pun intended) and have shown they want absolute control of their investments.

This may just be a vendetta against Garnett and his beef with Taylor, but when you look at the success the Vikings have seen under the Wilfs there isn’t much of an argument to make. This is the best choice for Glen Taylor, and the Minnesota Timberwolves to make.
