The Minnesota Timberwolves have made it to the second round of the NBA playoffs for the third consecutive year.

For years, Anthony Edwards has been the straw the stirs the drink on the court, but it is President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly that has been the main architect of this historic three-year run.

The Wolves lured Connelly away from Denver, and they’ve made a habit of beating in the playoffs ever since. In recent weeks, there has been steam building that the Dallas Mavericks might try and do the same.

However, after A-Rod and Marc Lore blocked their PoBO from interviewing for the Mavs job, they went ahead and hired Masai Ujiri as their new president of basketball operations on Monday.

Tim Connelly extension incoming from Minnesota Timberwolves

And that has seemingly opened up a window for the Timberwolves and Connelly — who is under contract through next season — to open up talks on a possible contract extension, according to NBA insider, Michael Scotto (Hoops Hype).

Now that Glen Taylor is out and things inside the organization have settled down, there’s no way A-Rod and Marc Lore want their highest ranking front office executive to be working on a lame duck contract.

Back in 2022, the MN Timberwolves signed Tim Connelly to a five-year deal worth $40 million. Then, last summer, Connelly opted into another short-term deal, as he waited for the change-in-ownership dust to settle at Mayo Clinic Square.

It’s also worth noting that the Chicago Bulls had been heavily connected to Minnesota Timberwolves GM Matt Lloyd, as their new PoBO, but they landed Bryson Graham to head their front office instead, meaning both top execs are expected to return.

MN Timberwolves turnover under Tim Connelly

Tim Connelly took over before the 2022-23 season replacing Sachin Gupta. After pushing the team to a 42-40 record in his first season at the helm, things have only trended upwards.

During year two, Connelly positioned the Timberwolves to win 56 games. That checked in as the second-highest tally in franchise history (trailing only 2003-04, 58 wins). The team has won 49 games each of the past two seasons.

This offseason will represent a critical juncture for Connelly and the Timberwolves. Regardless how far Minnesota gets in the playoffs this offseason, they’ll have an opportunity to reshape the roster. They already dabbled in the Giannis Antentokoumpo sweepstakes at the trade deadline, and could revisit those talks.

Connelly built the Denver Nuggets into a champion before joining Minnesota. The Timberwolves would love to see him do that here too.
