What’s Going on Between Anthony Edwards and Chris Finch?

The Minnesota Timberwolves were in Los Angeles last night playing against a shell of the LA Clippers, who were missing all of their best players, including Kawhi Leonard, Darius Garland and John Collins.
As we’ve seen far too often this season, when matched up against lesser opponents, the Wolves came out like they were shot out of a cannon that nobody lit.
Even with the Clippers shooting 23% from deep (5/22) and 43% from the floor, last night’s victory came right down to the wire and included some theatrics between Anthony Edwards and head coach Chris Finch.
Anthony Edwards seals game, screams at MN Timberwolves head coach
With the Timberwolves leading by one point and just 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Anthony Edwards dribbled from half-court, to the left wing, where he was immediately double-teamed.
But instead of passing out of it, Ant did a couple of hesitation dribbles, followed by a step back… and launched from deep over two defenders *swish*… to put Minnesota up 92-88 with 45 seconds left. They’d go on to win 94-88.
Immediately after, Edwards hunted down his head coach and screamed at him, “That’s what I do. That’s what I fucking do”. In his postgame interview, the 24-year-old superstar revealed that Finch had told him to pass the ball one possession earlier, when he missed a mid-range jumper.

Anthony Edwards finished Thursday’s game in LA with 31 points on 12/24 shooting. He was 1/5 from three-point land before he hit that game-sealing deep ball.
Back in the locker room after the win, Ant held another classic media scrum in front of his locker where he told reporters that, even if the right basketball move on the above possession was to pass the ball, the Minnesota Timberwolves are more likely to win if he shoots it.
Ant laughs off controversy; Chris Finch denies “pass the ball” comment
And after watching that three fall through the net, how can you argue with him? It’s worth noting, however, that Finch denied during his postgame presser that he ever told Edwards not to shoot the basketball one possession earlier.
So either someone is lying or there was a serious miscommunication between the Wolves superstar and their head coach last night that resulted in a Wolves victory. Either way, Ant laughed off the entire situation, confirming with reporters that he and Finch have “the best relationship ever, man”.

While everything worked out in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ favor last night, it is worth monitoring their locker room happenings, going forward. The incident between Ant and Finchy last night isn’t a one-off situation.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Rudy Gobert used his postgame interview to complain about Edwards and Julius Randle not playing hard enough on a consistent basis, which drew a strong reaction from Chris Finch, at the time.
It’s also interesting that the Wolves have recently brought back both Mike Conley and, on Thursday, Kyle Anderson — two guys known as leaders and glue guys in the Minnesota locker room during past seasons.
