Chris Finch Contract Extension is a Big Deal

Chris Finch was hired in the middle of yet another failed season and the President of Basketball Operations, who brought him on in rather controversial fashion last winter, is no longer with the Minnesota Timberwolves organization. But after leading the Timberwolves to Western Conference relevance for just the second time since 2004, there’s no dissention regarding the extension Finch signed today. Players, executives, fans and media alike all agree. Chris Finch is the real deal. Now, he’s set to walk the Target Center sidelines for at least three more seasons.

This contract extension is just as important as drafting Anthony Edwards was or extending Karl-Anthony Towns will be. Every successful business needs the right leaders in place. The sports world is no different.

Leadership Matters

As Minnesota sports fans, we know better than anyone. We’ve seen how toxicity within locker rooms and executive offices can, at best, cap a team’s potential for success. The examples here would include the Vikings under Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman or the Wild under Chuck Fletcher, Ryan Suter and Zach Parise.

At worst, an organization can fall upon a decade+ of desperate times that can squeeze the life out of an entire fanbase, like what we’ve seen with the Timberwolves since 2004. Terrible GM’s and coaches like David Kahn, Kurt Rambis and Kevin McHale dropped atom bomb after atom bomb of terrible decisions that routinely destroyed any hope mustered up by competent commanders like Flip Saunders, Rick Adelman or talents like Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio.

No Brainer

That’s why this decision to extend Chris Finch was such an obvious one. Sometimes, you just know when you have the right person in place. And everyone agrees, the Minnesota Timberwolves have the right head coach, with Finchy.
