It’s Unlikely Kirill Kaprizov Returns to Russia in Offseason

For the first few offseasons of his NHL career, Kirill Kaprizov has returned to his homeland of Russia. But his path back to the USA last summer/fall was anything but smooth, and because of that, he’s unlikely to return to Russia in 2-4 months, when the Minnesota Wild season eventually ends.

Kirill Kaprizov doubtful for return to Russia in offseason

After his harrowing experience getting out of homeland Russia in time for this season with the Wild, it’s unlikely Kirill Kaprizov will be making the trip back after the season.

This has to give the Wild some peace of mind, when they eventually enter one of the most important offseasons in recent franchise history. Last year, after a russian AHL goalie was sent to the gulag for avoiding military duties, Kirill tried and failed to defect.

For a time, his whereabouts were completely unknown. That was an uneasy and anxious period for those in the Wild organization, including Bill Guerin, teammates and others who had grown to love Kaprizov.

Avoiding the homeland

While avoiding Russia at all costs might seem like an obvious decision for Kaprizov, given the ongoing war going with Ukraine, but the situation is far from black and white. Kirill still has a lot of family members and friends in his home country and, unfortunately, he needs to be careful not to piss off the wrong people.

Kaprizov currently sits 8th in the NHL in goals (39) and 22nd in points (74). Prior to his recent injury, he was all the Wild had on offense. While they’ve quickly learned to produce offensively without him in recent games, there’s no doubt those in the organization are happy to hear of Kirill’s plans to stay away from the Kremlin this offseason.
