Defensive coordinator Brian Flores was a head coaching candidate early in the offseason, as was quarterbacks coach Josh McCown. Wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell was looking to become an offensive coordinator, but didn’t land the promotion. Even head coach Kevin O’Connell was in trade rumors before signing an extension.

The Vikings did lose one prominent coach, however. Assistant offensive coordinator and QBs coach Grant Udinski took the Jaguars’ OC job, leaving a decent sized hole in the staff. That hole was just filled on Monday night by a guy many thought wasn’t leaving his previous spot.

Minnesota Vikings hire Jordan Traylor to coaching staff

After Udinski took the Jaguars job on Feb. 5, the Vikings have now found his replacement. Jordan Traylor is coming over from the Saints to be the Vikings’ assistant OC and assistant QBs coach. He’s spent the last two years as an offensive assistant in New Orleans.

The 31-year-old Traylor has been with the Saints since 2019. He started as a scouting assistant before becoming a defensive assistant in 2021. He spent two seasons on that side of the ball before moving to offensive assistant. With Kellen Moore being hired as the Saints’ new head coach, there was likely to be a lot of turnover in the coaching ranks in New Orleans.

Just a week ago, though, it was assumed that Traylor would be retained by Moore after he was seen at the NFL Combine with the Saints brass. He was highly regarded by the team and is expected to be a future OC. But, after Moore hired Doug Nussmeier as his OC, Traylor’s services will now be welcomed by the Minnesota Vikings.

Related: Vikings Will be Involved in Bidding War for Top Free Agent Guard

The Saints have also hired former NFL head coach Scott Linehan to the offensive staff, as well as Tobijah Hughley to be an offensive assistant. If either were to get an expanded role with the team, it would hurt Traylor’s chance at a promotion. Moore would’ve been his third head coach he’s worked under in seven years, so maybe he wanted some more stability above him, when deciding to take the job with the Vikings.

Jordan Traylor brings experience to Vikings despite young age

Before joining the Saints, Traylor was an offensive analyst at Arkansas in 2018, primarily working with quarterbacks. He also worked as an offensive graduate assistant at Texas in 2016 and 2017. While there, he worked with quarterbacks and wide receivers. He also worked with quarterbacks at this year’s Senior Bowl, serving as the coach for the National Team.

Traylor is the son of UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor, so he’s been around coaching his entire life. He briefly played in college as a quarterback, transferring to Texas A&M for the 2014-15 season. While the job with the Minnesota Vikings is a promotion, he has the background that makes him a reasonable choice for the position.

His experience with quarterbacks will be especially valued. While the Vikings aren’t sure what they’re doing with the position just yet, the expectation is that J.J. McCarthy will start when he’s ready. A guy like Traylor with a background in QB coaching could be a big piece in getting McCarthy prepared for the season.

Keyshawn Johnson Tries to Bash Kirk Cousins; Forgets He Didn’t Throw Minneapolis Miracle https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/keyshawn-johnson-kirk-cousins-case-keenum-minneapolis-miracle/ Sat, 17 Feb 2024 03:13:38 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47925 Kirk Cousins joined the Minnesota Vikings during the offseason preceding the 2018 offseason. The move came after the Vikings had an impressive 13-3 record the previous year, highlighted by the memorable Minneapolis Miracle.

Related: Vikings OC Wes Phillips Pleads DWI Down to Careless Driving

While many may recall that moment, it’s important to note that Case Keenum was the quarterback who threw the pass to Stefon Diggs on that iconic play, which I know you already knew.

Keyshawn Johnson mistakes Case Keenum for Kirk Cousins during Minneapolis Miracle

However, Keyshawn Johnson, a TV personality and former superstar wide receiver turned NFL analyst was seemingly unaware or had forgotten this fact on FS1’s “Undisputed” Friday. While trying to criticize Kirk Cousins for his limited playoff victories, Johnson incorrectly asserted that Cousins was the QB who threw the Minneapolis Miracle into existence.

Whether his gaff was due to a lack of knowledge or just a brain fart, it led to one of the more cringy and embarrassing moments in Johnson’s football career (and that’s saying something). Worse yet, though? Nobody else on the show corrected him…

“He’s 1-3 lifetime in the postseason and the only win is the, the miracle, the eyes closed by the New Orleans Saints, that’s the only one”

Keyshawn Johnson

It’s quite amusing to see someone who is paid to discuss sports on television get their facts wrong as badly as this. It’s not just Vikings fans who know the players involved in the Minneapolis Miracle.

I’d venture to say that a significant portion of NFL fans know that it was Case Keenum who threw that iconic touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs, before Kirk was brought in that offseason, as the piece to get Minnesota over the hump.

Is Keyshawn mistaking one Vikings playoff win over Saints with another?

Perhaps Johnson intended to reference the playoff game in the 2019-20 season, which does stand as Kirk Cousins’ only playoff win, when the Vikings faced the New Orleans Saints (in NOLA, not Minneapolis).

While it’s the same team involved, it’s kind of classic that Keyshawn would remember Kirk for a lucky miracle heave, instead of the incredible performance he put on in 4th quarter and overtime in January 2020. I mean, his pass to Adam Thielen (above) was one of the most beautiful postseason passes thrown by a QB in Vikings history.

Related: Jason and Travis Kelce Love Vikings Fans and Playing at U.S. Bank Stadium

Then, just in case you (or Keyshawn Johnson) forgot, it was Kirk who threw a perfect 3rd down touch pass into the corner of the endzone to Kyle Rudolph for the win.

Mixing that game up with one of the most iconic miracle moments in NFL playoff history, probably has more to do with Kirk Cousins bias, than anything else. But when trying to spew hate for Kirk Cousins, the football world will reach however deep into their bag of criticisms as necessary… even if said criticisms don’t actually exist.

Byron Murphy Jr Confirms Harrison Smith Gifted Him Interception vs Saints https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/harrison-smith-byron-murphy-jr-interception-saints-vikings/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 20:53:20 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=45023 Last week, the Minnesota Vikings won their 5th-straight game, beating the New Orleans Saints 27-19. After jumping out to a huge 1st half lead, the Vikings allowed the Saints back into the game in the 2nd half, even within one possession during much of the 4th quarter.

Byron Murphy Jr clinches Vikings win with interception

Luckily, Jameis Winston was playing quarterback for New Orleans and that meant it was just a matter of time before he started throwing passes to the Vikings defense, which he did… twice. The last one was picked off by Byron Murphy Jr and it clinched the game.

Harrison Smith gave that interception to Byron Murphy Jr?

The new Minnesota cornerback wasn’t the only Viking in the vicinity of that overthrown Jameis Winston pass, though. Harrison Smith was also converging on it. But in the heat of the moment, with the ball in the air, Harry told Murphy Jr to take it.

Related: How Much Will Kirk Cousins Cost; Could Vikings Get Discount?

I first caught wind of this earlier, when Gabe Henderson (Vikings Entertainment Network) tweeted about it earlier on Wednesday. But later in the day, Byron Murphy Jr confirmed it with a tweet of his own, quoting Smith as saying, “Murph, you go get it”, at the time.

How Harrison Smith was able to compute everything happening around him and still know that he could allow Byron Murphy to take the interception, without worrying about someone else catching it too, is beyond me.

But, that’s why Harry is one of the best safeties to ever play football in world history and I didn’t make it past 8th grade football.

Cam Jordan Calls Out Kirk Cousins During Pass Rush Summit https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/cam-jordan-takes-shot-at-kirk-cousins/ Mon, 12 Jun 2023 16:03:55 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=42845 Kirk Cousins has gained a reputation among many of his peers, as a quarterback who often thinks too much and reacts too slowly. He has all the physical tools needed to be a great QB and, when given time in a good pocket, Kirk will make defenses pay nearly every time. But when the offensive game-plan goes awry, Cousins’ instincts can be slow to kick in.

Cam Jordan throws shade at Kirk Cousins

New Orleans Saints pass rusher, Cam Jordan, is clearly one NFL player who buys into these Kirk Cousins stereotypes. Jordan was speaking in front of a group of pass rushers at Von Miller’s annual pass rush summit about the importance of playing fast and thinking less. His speech, which didn’t mention any other player specifically, ended with a rehearsed shot across the bow at Kirk Cousins.

“A fast wrong decision can be a right decision. A fast right decision, you’re a winner. And a slow right decision will get your ass on the bench. Cause there’s someone out here that’s going to be moving at a different speed. Slow right decisions, we love ’em. We call ’em Kirk Cousins…”

Cam Jordan at Von Miller’s Pass Rush Summit
Why so mad, Cam?

As I pointed out at the start of this blog, Kirk Cousins is more of a thinker than a reactor. But he isn’t the only QB who is like that around the NFL. He’s just the best one. Kirk has found ways to work around one of his biggest weaknesses to become one of the most proficient quarterbacks in the NFL, regularly throwing for over 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns just about every season of his career.

What Cam Jordan’s shade really shows us is just how frustrated the Kirk haters are right now. There are 70+ QBs on active NFL rosters every year. Kirk is among the 10 best. So picking on the best “overthinker” in the league doesn’t make much sense.

Especially when it’s Kirk Cousins who has dominated his matchup vs Jordan’s Saints. In fact, the Vikings have just one playoff win since Kirk took over as QB in 2018. It came against Jordan’s Saints and included a couple of late-game dagger from Cousins.

Kirk Cousins Regrets Cautious Red Zone Decisions vs Saints https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/kirk-cousins-regrets-cautious-red-zone-decisions-vs-saints/ Wed, 05 Oct 2022 15:36:46 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=40626 The Kirk Cousins’ War is raging across the Minnesota Vikings’ fanbase once again. It isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last. Yes, the purple grabbed another bumpy win in week 4 (vs the New Orleans Saints) and moved to 3-1 on the season.

But there are media members and fans across Vikings nation who believe Kirk Cousins is leaving meat on the passing game bone, especially in the red zone. That he’s choosing dump down routes, early in his progressions, instead of daggering defenses for touchdowns.

Kirk Defenders Charge In

As expected, Kirk’s defenders have come out IN VOLUME. Go ahead and peak into those replies. Lots of — “Oh, could you make that throw?”energy. And — “Oh, it’s easy when you slow it down and re-watch it 200 times”vibes.

No, Kevin Siefert (ESPN) probably doesn’t think he could play quarterback in the NFL. He is, however, paid to report on and critique Cousins’ play on the football field. Even if he wasn’t, it’s not illegal to have a Kirk Cousins take. That’s part of being a fan. Part of being a sports media member. And yes, we all break sports down in replay form. Just like Cousins and the Vikings do. It’s a great way to figure out what went wrong.

And nobody critiques Kirk Cousins more than Kirk Cousins. Right after the game, when asked about red zone woes on Sunday morning in London, Kirk was blunt about his regret over being too cautious early in his reads.

Kirk Needs to be Better

There’s a reason why the Minnesota Vikings offense isn’t humming along like many of us thought it would. Not all of that is because of Kirk Cousins. But as QB, he is the one person on roster who can carry a football team to greater heights.

We have plenty of statistical evidence that point out Kirk’s sub-par play, too. Through four games, Cousins is posting career lows (as a starter) in completion percentage (63.1%), TD/INT ratio (3/2), yards/attempt (6.6), adjusted yards/attempt (6.2), QB Rating (84.1) and QBR (45.7).

If he reads the field properly and makes accurate throws, the Vikings will usually win. We know that, he knows that, Kevin O’Connell knows that. So, debate over. Kirk needs to be better.

Dalvin Cook Good to Go vs Saints https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/dalvin-cook-good-to-go-vs-saints-minnesota-vikings-london/ Fri, 30 Sep 2022 16:21:38 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=40593 The Minnesota Vikings injury report, heading into the weekend, has been released. Andrew Booth Jr is “Doubtful”, Za’Darius Smith is “Questionable” and Dalvin Cook is NOT listed. That means, barring a drastic change, the Vikings will have their starting running back in London vs the New Orleans Saints on Sunday morning.

This is good news for a Minnesota team that finally found a way to establish the run game last week vs the Lions. Both Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison kept the Vikings in that game for three quarters. Then, Kirk Cousins was able to dagger them in the 4th quarter.

On the season, Cook has amassed 203 yards and one touchdown (42 carries). His 4.7 Y/C average is the same as what he finished with in 2021 (1,159 yards, 6 TD, 249 CAR). On Sunday, New Orleans will go without Michael Thomas and, likely, Jameis Winston.

Vikings Likely to Face Backup QB Andy Dalton https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-likely-to-face-andy-dalton-new-orleans-saints-london/ Fri, 30 Sep 2022 14:25:24 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=40588 The Minnesota Vikings did not know which New Orleans Saints quarterback they’d be facing, when they landed in London early this morning. But that picture got a little bit clearer moments ago, when Jameis Winston was reported as “doubtful” to play on Sunday.

That means, the starting quarterback for the Saints is expected to be 34-year-old veteran, Andy Dalton (more on him below the tweet). But Jameis Winston is far from New Orleans’ only injury concerns this weekend. In the same tweet that reported Jameis’ status, Tom Pelissero announced star wide receiver Michael Thomas as “Out”.

Seeing Red

If Andy Dalton starts Sunday morning, it’ll be the third-straight year that he’s started vs the Minnesota Vikings. All three will have been on different teams. In 2020, he and the Dallas Cowboys daggered Zimmer & Co late and won 31-28. Last season, Dalton QB’d the Chicago Bears in week 17. That game ended as a 31-17 Vikings victory.

Andy Dalton had three touchdowns for the Cowboys in 2020, but only threw for 203 yards. Last year for the Bears, he threw for 325 yards, but had more interceptions (2) than touchdowns (1). In all reality, a good team beats this New Orleans Saints team, no matter which two of their quarterbacks is playing.

Unless in-his-prime Drew Brees flying in to save the day, this is a team that’s banged up and had plenty of issues even before that.

Atrocities Committed Against Vikings in ’09 NFC Championship Far Worse Than You Remember https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/referee-atrocities-against-minnesota-vikings-in-09-nfc-championship-far-worse-than-you-remember-new-orleans-saints/ Thu, 29 Sep 2022 19:31:43 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=40579 In 2009, the New Orleans Saints won a Super Bowl that they never should’ve been a part of. Two weeks earlier, they were vastly outplayed by the Minnesota Vikings, in one of the most memorable NFC Championships in NFL history.

Sure, Brett Favre threw THE interception and Adrian Peterson fumbled 174 times, but everybody knows it was the referees who made that infamous postseason game competitive. Hell, Sean Payton was suspended for a full season because of the paid assault the Saints defense was allowed to commit against Favre.

The NFL and their referee minions

Still, most do not remember just how badly the Minnesota Vikings were wronged that late January night. It wasn’t just the Bountygate scandal or the hits that Favre took. In fact, I’d say that part was the least of Minnesota’s series of unfortunate events that night. Let’s go back and look at the tape.

The Bountygate investigation got Sean Payton a movie deal and made the Brett Favre sandwich an iconic moment in league history. The phantom Ben Leber pass interference penalty is hard to forget too, especially if you listen to KFAN, where Leber is a regular contributor.

The atrocities you may not remember.

But earlier in their game-winning overtime drive, the Saints faced a critical 4th and 1, just inside of Vikings territory. Pierre Thomas leaped over the line and Chad Greenway’s helmet met the football while he Thomas was in mid-air. The resulting fumble pushed the Saints’ offense back behind the line to gain. Easy call, right? Wrong, even after booth review, the 1st down stood and New Orleans’ game-winning drive to continued.

Oh, you have a steel trap memory and remember all of this? Well, what about the zebras’ knockout blow that night? On 2nd and 14, Robert Meechum clearly dropped a pass from Drew Brees, that pushed the Saints into easy game-winning field goal range.

Yet again, the Vikings got their booth review. Yet again, it didn’t matter. Only one team was going to win that night and it wasn’t the one coming from Minnesota. So with Vikings vs Saints (London Edition) upon us this weekend, it’s important we remember the historic football atrocity levied at us back in 2009. #NeverForget

It wasn’t pretty but the 1st half of this much-anticipated wildcard game proved one thing to everyone watching football this weekend… this game wasn’t going to be a blowout. Drew Brees wasn’t going to come out and throw all over this defense, like he has done so many times before. This game wasn’t going to be like that.

Unfortunately, Kirk Cousins and the Vikings offense wasn’t moving the ball much better. The game never lacked excitement, however. Even when the offenses weren’t moving with great efficiency, there were still big plays and turnovers to be had on both sides.

It was stress… but it was also a 13-10 lead at halftime for the purple and gold. Anybody would have taken that, going into the game. (I hate that saying too.) But, we were in the driver’s seat.

The 2nd half was different than the first. The game was still back and forth but the Viking found their footing on offense for a bit and the Saints found Taysom Hill. Just as everyone was talking about Kirk Cousins’ inability to take over the game, he started to show flashes of the Denim Kirk in the flesh. But, Taysom Hill is a real asshole… Who would have thought the Saints’ downfall would come when they replaced a humming Taysom Hill for Drew Brees?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.0.9″ hover_enabled=”0″] [/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.9″ hover_enabled=”0″]

Unfortunately, Kirk couldn’t lead us on the game-winning drive in regular time (this is called foreshadowing) though, and the Saints would kick a field goal at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Then… we caught a little bit of luck (that’s right) and we won the coin toss.

That meant one thing. The same OT rule that fucked the Vikings in one direction so many years ago.. had the chance to do it again, in the other direction. The Vikings would need a TD for the win but would give the ball back to the Saints if all they could muster was a field goal.

It was Kirk Cousins’ time to show everyone that he CAN be THAT guy. It was his moment, Herb Brooks style. Kirk decided he was done hearing all of the bullshit about his inability to win in big games and perform in big moments. It was his time.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.0.9″ hover_enabled=”0″] [/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.9″ hover_enabled=”0″]

And that was that. Kirk Cousins can win big games now. He can perform in the biggest of moments, now. Believe it because you saw it. And now, guess what we have next weekend in California?

A big game.
