The NBA Cup, now in its second season, kicks off on November 12th, with the Timberwolves playing their first group stage game. During the tournament, home teams often showcase bold, eye-catching court designs to highlight the significance of the event for fans.

Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Cup count design leaked for the 2024-25 season

This season, the Minnesota Timberwolves are taking a darker approach with their court design, as revealed by leaked NBA 2K25 files. The leaked files have given fans an early glimpse at the Timberwolves’ new in-season tournament court. It showcases a bold and dramatic look for the upcoming games, mocking the statement jerseys.

At first glance, it looks fresh and clean, and while it matches their statement jerseys, which fans love. It’s a complete departure from last season’s in-season tournament jerseys and court design.

Keep in mind, this new leak isn’t confirmed or official yet. It was pulled from the NBA 2K25 files, which strongly suggests it could be the court for the NBA Cup this season. However, nothing is set in stone until we get an official word from the NBA or the Timberwolves.

Last season, the Minnesota Timberwolves used a lighter blue court for their NBA Cup games. Which was inspired by their city edition uniforms that coordinated with the court design.

Ho Hum, Timberwolves Win Again; Start NBA Cup Group Play 1-0 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-win-spurs-nba-cup-group-play/ Sat, 11 Nov 2023 03:49:22 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=44900 The Minnesota Timberwolves are now 6-2 on the 2023-24 season and, as a lifelong Wolves fan, even typing that gives me goosebumps. Their 117-110 win on Friday, over the San Antonio Spurs, actually counts as two victories.

NBA Cup: Timberwolves win with team effort vs Spurs

Not only did they notch another line into their regular season win column, but the victory makes the Timberwolves 1-0 in the new ‘NBA Cup’ in-season tournament. Anthony Edwards showed why he is getting Michael Jordan comparisons from scouts, scoring 28 points to go with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

Ant wasn’t the only star who contributed in big ways vs the Spurs. It was a group effort. All five starters scored in double figures and Karl-Anthony Towns, who has been off to a slow start this season, posted a double-double, scored 27 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Wolves prove they can win when they do not bring A game

And in all honesty, tonight’s win might be one of the Wolves worst performances of the season. They fell behind early and played sloppy throughout, turning the ball over 18 times, even allowing a very young and mediocre Spurs team to come back from 18 points down to make it way too close of a game, late.

But even in a game where they allowed the 2nd most points of their young season, this game was never really in question. The Wolves have now won 5-straight games and look like a top-5 team in the NBA, just like Bill Simmons said.

Timberwolves NBA In-Season Tournament Tips Off vs Spurs https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-nba-in-season-tournament/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 19:43:29 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=44881 The NBA created an in-season tournament that is debuting this year. The format will look rather familiar to soccer fans, but might cause confusion among most American sports fans. On the line: A new trophy called the NBA Cup and an extra paycheck for the players from the team that wins.

Timberwolves NBA In-Season Tournament tips off

The 2023 tourney started on November 3 and a champion will be crowned on December 9, but the Minnesota Timberwolves play their first in-season tournament game tonight, vs the San Antonio Spurs.

Here’s how the NBA in-season tournament works, plus anything else you need to know before tonight’s group play matchup.

Group Play

The Western and Eastern conferences were each split into three groups (of 5 teams). Through November 28, teams will do battle round robin style within their 5-team groups. Every team will play four games (two and home and two on the road). The Minnesota Timberwolves are in Group C of the Western Conference.

West: Group C

  1. Minnesota Timberwolves
  2. Sacramento Kings
  3. Golden State Warriors
  4. Oklahoma City Thunder
  5. San Antonio Spurs

The team with the best round-robin record in each group, will automatically advance to the Knockout Stage, along with one wild card team (best group play record that didn’t win their group) from each conference.

Knockout Stage

That means the knockout stage of the in-season tournament will have 8 total teams (4 from each conference). This portion of the tournament is bracket-play single-elimination.

The first round is played at the higher seed’s home court (on Dec. 4 and Dec. 5). The semi-finals and finals will be played at a neutral site on Dec. 7 and Dec. 9.

Other details:

  • Each team has a special court design for NBA Cup games
  • NBA in-tournament games count toward the overall season record of the teams that play in them.
  • Those who move on will have the knockout stage games count toward their regular season records.
  • Those who are knocked out in group play, will continue their regular season schedule**

**During the Knockout Rounds on days when In-Season Tournament games are not scheduled (Wednesday, Dec. 6 and Friday, Dec. 8), the 22 teams that do not qualify for the Knockout Rounds will each play two regular-season games.

A formulaic approach will determine the matchups for these games using the Group Play standings in each conference (5th-15th).  Two of the 22 games will be scheduled cross-conference since there will be an odd number of teams in each conference that do not advance to the Quarterfinals.  These cross-conference games will be scheduled between bottom-finishing teams in the Group Play stage subject to travel constraints, and no team will play more than one of its two games cross-conference.  The other 20 games will be scheduled within conference featuring teams that are otherwise scheduled to play each other three times over the course of the season wherever possible.

The four teams that lose in the Quarterfinals will each play a regular-season game on Friday, Dec. 8, against the opponent in their same conference.
