The only team seemingly better is their Central Division rival Colorado, after the Avs took them to the cleaners in 5-1 blowout fashion Sunday evening. But let’s look beyond that for a moment.

Minnesota’s epic surge over the past month inspired Bill Guerin to make the Quinn Hughes trade, which made the Wild a legitimate contender. With the trade deadline still over a month away, it’s also possible Bill Guerin may not be done wheeling.

One position he will not be looking for, however, is goalie. Because the Minnesota Wild already roster one of the best netminding duos in hockey, with Filip Gustavsson and rookie first round pick, Jesper Wallstedt.

Retired MN Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury drawing interest

Of course, having one really good goalie is a luxury in the NHL, let alone two. And other playoff contenders around the league are getting desperate to find help. So desperate, in fact, that they are trying to convince the GOAT Marc-Andre Fleury to come out of retirement, according to Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic),

After wrapping up his playing career as a 40-year-old, Marc-Andre Fleury transitioned to a front office role with the Minnesota Wild, and seems happy in retirement. Of course, that fire to play never stops… just ask Phillip Rivers.

Last season with the Wild, Fleury played in 26 games, starting 22 of them. His .899 save percentage was a tick above the .895 mark from the year prior, and not far off from his .912 career average.

The three-time Stanley Cup winner, and eventual Hall of Famer, really has nothing left to accomplish in his career. But with a competitor like Flower, a return is probably just the right offer away, so we’ll see.

Marc-Andre Fleury Not Done Playing Hockey Just Yet… and What About MN Wild EBUG Duties? https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/marc-andre-fleury-retirement-world-championships-future-ebug/ Mon, 05 May 2025 19:16:47 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=62957 Marc-Andre Fleury is officially finished with his 21-year NHL career, after announcing his retirement and meeting with media for his Minnesota Wild 2024-25 exit interview early Monday afternoon. The Quebec native leaves the NHL after 1,051 games played (575-339-97) with an incredible 2.60 goals against average and .912 save percentage.

Fleury started his professional career as the No. 1 overall pick from an iconic 2003 first round NHL Draft class that included Eric Staal (No. 2), Thomas Vanek (No. 5), Ryan Suter (No. 7), Zach Parise (No. 17), Brent Burns (No. 20), Brent Seabrook (No. 14), Ryan Getzlaf (No. 19), Ryan Kesler (No. 23) and Corey Perry (No. 28).

Retired Marc-Andre Fleury playing for Team Canada in Worlds

But if you want to see Marc-Andre Fleury take the ice in games that matter one more time, then make sure you are watching the upcoming IIHF World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden from May 9-25, where both Fleury and his old buddy Sidney Crosby have already signed up to play for Team Canada.

It will be the first MAF has ever suited up for the IIHF World Championships. In fact, Fleury hasn’t gotten much run with Team Canada, since he turned 21. He played in the U-20 World Juniors back in 2002-03 and 2003-04 (10 games, 1.70 GAA, .923 Save %) and made one Canadian Olympic Team (2010), but didn’t get an appearance in net.

But could it be possible, someway-somehow, we see Marc-Andre Fleury take the ice again in a MN Wild uniform? Well, his teammates are trying to convince him to sign on as the 2025-26 emergency goalie, since the Fleury’s are staying in the Twin Cities area, post-retirement. NHL emergency goalies must be at the ready for all home games and they can be activated for either the home or visiting team.

Marc-Andre Fleury interested in Minnesota Wild EBUG duty?

When asked by media on Monday if he is open to such a role, the 40-year-old Fleury confirmed that he hasn’t shot it down yet. The MN Wild activated their emergency goalie one time in 2024-25, and the EBUG has actually taken the ice at Xcel Energy Center only a few times in franchise history.

Russo: ‘[Your teammates] joked about you being the EBUG. In all seriousness, can you see yourself around the team a lot, throwing on the pads next year at all?’

Fleury: “Yeah, why not? I don’t know, I’d have to talk to Billy [Guerin] and [John] Heinzy about it, but if Gus needs a day off or gets sick or something, or Wally, yeah why not? It’s a good workout, get a good sweat and have fun with the guys, so…”

Closing MN Wild Player Press Conference of 2024-25

Of course, it’s unlikely Fleury is willing to commit to emergency goalie duty next season. I’m sure he wants to be available to help the Minnesota Wild, but that might be too much of a commitment. If he wants to split time with current EBUG Connor Beaupre offered on X to split the job with the NHL Hall of Famer.

How good was Fleury with/before MN Wild?

Not only is Flower a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but he’s in the conversation as the best goalie in NHL history, winning THREE Stanley Cups and being named to FIVE All-Star Games, though he only played in one (2010-11).

Marc-Andre Fleury’s 1,051 games played are the second-most of any goalie in NHL history, behind only Martin Brodeur (1,266), who also stands as the only goalie with more wins (691) in his career than MAF’s 575 victories. Fleury’s 76 career shutouts are tied for 10th-most all-time.

Top Prospect Jesper Wallstedt Recalled by Minnesota Wild Amid Goalie Injury Concern https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/minnesota-wild-news/jesper-wallstedt-recalled-emergency-conditions-jakub-lauko-injured-reserve/ Sun, 15 Dec 2024 01:23:53 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=58231 Guess what, the Minnesota Wild won again on Saturday, this time vs the Philadelphia Flyers. It was their seventh win in nine games, making them 20-6-4 on the 2024-25 season, good for the best record in the NHL, with 44 points, one more than division rival Winnipeg. In the process, however, they lost yet another player, forward Jakub Lauko, to injured reserve.

Lauko, a 2018 3rd round pick out of the Czech Republic, left Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury, and did not return. The 24-year-old has played 24 games this season with the Wild, potting two goals and helping on two more (4 points).

Minnesota Wild call up Jesper Wallstedt under emergency conditions

The Czech star out of Prague played the first two years of his NHL career with the Boston Bruins, who drafted him No. 77 overall six years ago. According to Michael Russo (The Athletic), the emergency recall of Wallstedt likely means “something’s up” with either Filip Gustavsson or Marc-Andre Fleury.

Fleury minded the Minnesota Wild net for the entirety of today’s win vs the Flyers, and Gustavsson was on the bench, assumedly ready to back him up. Still, nobody has a better feel for the team they cover in all of the NHL, than Russo. He wouldn’t tweet about an assumed injury, unless he was very sure in his assumption.

So, as we await news on the two veteran Wild goaltenders on roster, let’s dig into this emergency call-up of top goalie prospect, Jesper Wallstedt, who is having a season to forget, between St. Paul and Des Moines. Remember, Wallstedt was supposed to be part of a three-headed net-minding monster, between he, Gus Bus and Flower.

Only after Minnesota rose to the top of the NHL standings, behind Gustavsson, who has been one of the best goalies in the league, through 30 games, did the Wild shift their plans and demote Wallstedt back to Iowa, where he has not been very good5-6-1 | 3.77 goals against average | .874 save percentage.

Still, that hasn’t shaken Bill Guerin’s confidence in the future of Jesper Wallstedt. He is still expected to get a bunch of games next season, and eventually take over the net for the next decade. Just last season, Wallstedt went 22-19-6 down in Iowa, with a 2.70 GAA and .910 save percentage.

Get well soon, Jacub Lauko…

Just one game after Jakub Lauko made a name for himself among the Minnesota Wild fanbase, when he got into a haymaker-fueled throwdown with 24-year-old Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ty Emberson, and came out on top of one of the best fights of the 2024-25 NHL season, so far. Now, he’ll be out of the Wild lineup for at least a week.

Minnesota Wild Sign Marc-Andre Fleury to Contract Extension https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/minnesota-wild-news/2024-wild-marc-andre-fleury-contract-extension/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 15:54:55 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=49919 There have been rumors that it would happen, going back months, when Marc-Andre Fleury opted not to be traded away from the Minnesota Wild at the in-season trade deadline. But on Wednesday, it became official.

Minnesota Wild, Marc-Andre Fleury agree to contract extension

Flower is returning for another year of service, as an NHL goaltender and his brand new one-year contract extension ($2.5 million) makes it official that he will play his 40-year-old season in a Wild sweater.

Minnesota originally acquired Fleury on March 21, 2022, for a second-round pick. He’s 50-32-9, with a 2.89 GAA, .903 SV% and four shutouts in 96 games (91 starts) in the three seasons since.

Now, what will the Wild do with Filip Gustavsson, who signed a multi-year contract extension last offseason. Will they let Jesper Wallstedt season in the AHL for another year, or is time to move on from the Gus Bus? That’s the next goalie question that Guerin will eventually have to answer during the offseason.

Minnesota Wild Shock Hockey World by Pulling Goalie in OT vs Preds… and it Works https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/minnesota-wild-pull-goalie-ot-risk-point-predators/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 23:06:46 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=48679 The Minnesota Wild need points and they need them fast. So after coming away with just one point after going toe-to-toe with the best team in the league on Friday, the Colorado Avalanche, John Hynes decided that one point was not going to cut it against on Sunday against the Nashville Predators.

So much so that he was willing to give up the extra period point entirely, as the overtime minutes started ticking away. With 1:50 left in OT, and the two teams at even strength (3v3), Hynes did something that the TNT broadcasters and analysts all said they have never seen in their (life)time of watching and playing the game of hockey.

John Hynes pulls Minnesota Wild goalie in OT at full strength

He pulled Marc-Andre Fleury out of net to give the Minnesota Wild a 4-3 advantage. Before the announcers or anyone else watching could wrap their minds around what was happening… Hynes’ astounding move worked. Kaprizov to Zuccarello to Boldy for the one-timer.

Not only was the move shocking to everybody watching like me, who did not know some of the finer details to the NHL overtime rules. For those who have great hockey minds, their minds were completely blown when they saw MAF skate to the bench.

Related: Wild Land Intriguing Scoring Prospect Luke Toporowski in Pat Maroon Trade

Had the Wild given up the empty net goal, not only would the Wild have lost their chance at two points during the proceeding shootout, but NHL overtime rules state that pulling your goalie while at even strength in OT means that you relinquish the point you gained once the game went to OT. That’s right, once Fleury skated off the ice, it was all or nothing for the Wild.

So, thanks to an incredibly ballsy move by new head coach John Hynes, the Wild stopped the surging Nashville Predators, who now sit nine points ahead of the Wild in the 1st Western Conference wildcard spot. The Vegas Golden Knights hold the final playoff spot in the West, six points ahead of Minnesota.

Marc-Andre Fleury Contract Extension with Wild Appears More Likely than Retirement https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/marc-andre-fleury-extension-minnesota-wild-more-likely-than-retirement/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 19:36:10 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=48468 Marc-Andre Fleury, the 39-year-old goaltender for the Minnesota Wild, will turn 40 in November. Despite his age, it doesn’t appear the hall of famer is ready to hang up his pads just yet. In February, there had been early trade deadline speculation that “Flower” would want to be moved to a contender before the deadline, so he could continue his 17-season playoff streak and retire on a high note.

When the Wild caught fire post All-Star break, that trade steam died down, in part thanks to Fleury making it clear he would be staying in Minnesota as long as the Wild remained in the playoff hunt. But now, after losing three of their last four, general manager Bill Guerin may be on the verge of waving the white flag on this rather disastrous 2023-24 season.

Well, the Minnesota Wild have spoken loud and clear to president and general manager Bill Guerin: They are not a legit playoff contender.

Michael Russo and Joe Smith – The Athletic

Minnesota Wild more likely to extend Marc-Andre Fleury than trade him

But even if the Wild do officially become trade deadline sellers this week, according to Michael Russo and Joe Smith (The Athletic), it now seems much more likely that Guerin ends up extending his good friend’s expiring contract than it does he trades him. In fact, Billy has already told Flower he will not be dealt before Friday’s deadline.

You wouldn’t blame the future Hall of Famer if he changed his mind from a week ago, when he told The Athletic  he wanted to stay through the deadline, saying, “This is my team.” But we don’t see that happening. As The Athletic subsequently reported, Fleury and Guerin agreed that no matter what happened in the Wild’s four games before the deadline, Minnesota wasn’t going to move him. Fleury’s impressive streak of 17 consecutive seasons in the playoffs appears in jeopardy, which is a shame. But Fleury has earned the right to call the shots, and if he decides to continue playing and not retire this summer, there’s a world where the Wild look at re-signing him.

Michael Russo and Joe Smith – The Athletic

Fleury’s impressive 17 consecutive NHL playoff appearances started with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2003 to 2017. Then, he was dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights, where he spent 2017 to 2021, before going to the Chicago Blackhawks for parts of two seasons between 2021 and 2022.

Related: Wild’s Jake Middleton Uses Jeremy Lauzon’s Face as Punching Bag in Epic Beatdown

At the ’22 deadline, Fleury was traded to the Wild, where he’s now been for two full seasons. But being away from his family, even though they were just hours away in Chicago, weighed heavy on Flower and plays big into his decision this year.

Russo recently appeared on “Bumper to Bumper” with Dan Barreiro on KFAN Radio, where the Wild insider dove deeper into how likely it is that the HOF goalie returns to the Minnesota Wild for one more season (3:30 mark – Transcribed Below).

“You know we’ve started to sort of float out there — and you know know me, I don’t just make stuff up and throw stuff against the wall — I’m starting to get the impression that if Flower decides after the season that he’s not gonna retire — and I’m starting to get that sense that his future is still very much in hockey and and wanting to play — I think that Bill Guerin would consider bringing him back.”

“I don’t think that there are 100% convinced that [Jesper Wallstedt] is ready for the NHL; and if he’s not ready for the NHL, [Guerin] might wanna roll the dice with another Gus/Flower tandem next year, and then at some point bring up Wallstedt, and we’ll see what happens there. But I’m not convinced anymore that this is gonna be the end of the line of [Marc-Andre Fleury] and Minnesota. I think the fact [he doesn’t wanna be traded] and that Bill Guerin has agreed to it, according to our report, you know… I think that opens the door even further that he’s gonna come back next season”

Micheal Russo

The Wild have 20 games remaining in the regular season and they are currently trailing the Nashville Predators by 8 points for the final wild card spot. That’s a lot of ground to make up

This is positive news for 39-year-old goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who would prefer to stay in Minnesota, as long as they’re contending for a playoff spot, something that was feeling less and less possible leading up to the break.

Wednesday’s victory against the Coyotes may prove to be a pivotal moment for the team’s trajectory moving forward. With Minnesota now within striking distance of a playoff spot, Fleury told Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic) that he’s still confident the Wild will make the postseason and that he’s not going anywhere, as long as they’re still in the conversation.

“Fleury met with his agent, veteran Allan Walsh, this week and discussed the March 8 trade deadline. And where I’m told things stand is that the future Hockey Hall of Fame goalie still believes in the Wild’s chances to make the playoffs and doesn’t want to bail. He’s loyal to his teammates. Always has been.

He would only entertain a trade closer to March 8 if the team falls out of the race. If that were to happen, my sense is he would only consider two or three teams at most — perhaps the likes of the Colorado Avalanche, Maple Leafs or Carolina Hurricanes, if those clubs had interest. As it stands, it’s status quo for Fleury in Minnesota.”

Pierre LeBrun – The Athletic

This season, Fleury has posted a 10-9-3 record, with one shutout and rather impressive stats, especially recently. His 2.83 GAA and .902 save percentage are both getting dangerously close to his career averages of 2.59 and .912, respectively.

There’s still plenty of time to figure things out before the trade deadline hits on March 8, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the in-season clock is a friend of president of hockey operations, Bill Guerin.

Related: Brandon Duhaime Drops William Lockwood in Bar Fight 1st Period

Early season struggles have the Wild backed into such a brutal corner that every single loss, even in January, is devastating. It’s so bad that one short losing streak will likely sink any realistic chances Minnesota has at making the NHL postseason. And should they fall out of it, their Guerin is expected to go into sell-mode, leading up to the deadline.

What would Minnesota Wild “sell-mode” look like?

Now, “sell-mode’ is a relative term. If you’re looking for ‘BLOWOUT SALE’ banners hanging around Xcel Energy Center, you’ll be disappointed.

Veteran contract extensions inexplicably offered by Guerin, before the start of the season, and happily accepted by rusting vets like Marcus Foligno, Mats Zuccarello and Ryan Hartman have handcuffed the Wild from doing much of anything. Had those guys not been extended, all three would have been very valuable expiring contract assets at the trade deadline.

“Remember, even if Guerin still wanted to bring Hartman, Zuccarello and Foligno back, he could have still dealt them come March and attempted to re-sign some or all next summer. Now they all have no-move clauses. So they’re here to stay.”

The Athletic

So instead of a massive blowout sale, the Wild’s trade deadline sell-mode will look more like a local grocery store clearance rack. There are a few potentially tempting items available (but they’re cheap and on clearance for a reason).

Marc-Andre Fleury to Flyers, then retirement?

One of the few players who is all but guaranteed to be moved, if the Minnesota Wild enter sell-mode, is 39-year-old goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who first landed in St. Paul as part of a trade deadline deal with the Chicago Blackhawks back in March, 2022. MAF is pretty much on the block already and steam surrounding his eventual landing spot has picked up recently.

Related: Marc-Andre Fleury Trade Rumors are Flying Already

On Thursday evening, MAF popped up again on a list of potential trade targets for the Philadelphia Flyers, who are seeking a netminder they can pair with rookie, Sam Ersson, after their starter Carter Hart went out indefinitely with injury.

According to NHL insider Jim Cerny (Sportsnaut), Marc-Andre Fleury is one of six goalies who Philly might have interest in. Of course, with the Wild sitting near the bottom of the West, any contender that needs goalie help is going to be loosely linked to MAF. Cerny’s mention of Fleury’s likely retirement, however, caught my attention.

Fleury holds the cards here. It’s likely his final NHL season and he will have a say if he goes anywhere and where he’d like to end up. If Fleury believes the Flyers are a legit contender and is willing to split time with Ersson, this could work.

Jim Cerny – Sportsnaut

Fleury trying to avoid pre-retirement circus?

In case you missed it, it’s been reported a bit more recently how uncomfortable Fleury gets when he returns to Pittsburgh, after he helped them win three Stanley Cups from 2009-2018. He’s just too beloved there. Every time he goes back to that city, he’s thrown off by the many ancillary distractions that come along with the history he helped create for that fanbase and franchise.

We know MAF wants to play for a contending team, but that’s been the case for multiple seasons now. Locally, reporters have played coy with Fleury’s retirement plans, trying to leave the door open for a possible return next year.

Related: A Matt Dumba Reunion Might be Wild’s Best Option to Replace Jared Spurgeon

But here’s an NHL insider with three decades of experience around the league — which includes broadcasting in the NY markets and reporting for the NY Times and NHL.com — who seems very confident that this is Fleury’s final season wearing the pads professionally.

MAF doesn’t like the spotlight being on him, when it comes to ceremonies and awkward award celebrations, especially when he has hockey to play after. So for all the hockey fans out there, enjoy one of the world’s greatest goalies in hockey history while you can.

Marc-Andre Fleury Trade Rumors are Flying Already https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/marc-andre-fleury-trade-rumors-heating-up-wild/ Wed, 17 Jan 2024 21:55:07 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=46733 Marc-Andre Fleury and the Minnesota Wild have struggled all year with consistency. Blame injuries or don’t, they find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference standings (41 PTS) either way.

With the NHL season half over, the Wild need to pick up the pace or they will quickly fall out of the playoff race, something Bill Guerin says hasn’t happened yet. But if it does, the Wild don’t just risk letting their season get away, they risk losing goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, too.

Could Minnesota Wild Trade Marc-Andre Fleury?

If the Wild continue to lose, according to a recent report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic), Fleury may not finish the season with the Wild.

I’m certainly not ready to write off the Wild. A lot can change in a few weeks. But if that second-half surge doesn’t happen, Fleury will be an intriguing name ahead of March 8, just like he was two years ago when Chicago ultimately dealt him to the Wild. I know of a couple of teams that are planning to reach out to the Wild in the coming weeks to get a sense of things on him. Just part of doing their due diligence.

The Athletic

The NHL trade deadline is on March 8th, giving the Minnesota Wild plenty of time to maybe go on a run, GM Bill Guerin has said he still believes in his club and is not ready to give up on them quite yet. Guerin recently had a press conference.

“And I think Flower just wants to focus on his team right now and his play,” added Guerin. “We’ll see how it goes and then we’ll have the appropriate conversations. “It’s just too early for that, and I’m not ready and I’m sure Flower isn’t ready to have that conversation either.”

Bill Guerin (via The Athletic)

After new head coach John Hynes was hired, the Wild went on a little run, winning 11 of 14 games, and getting them back in the early season playoff race. Since then, the Wild have won two out of the last ten games, putting their season in danger of slipping away before the All-Star break.

Kirill Kaprizov and Jonas Brodin have recently returned from injuries and Bill Guerin is hoping that will help lead to a hot January finish. But the early rumblings make one thing clear for sure. Fleury isn’t finishing this season with a non-playoff team.

Landing Spots For Fleury

The NHL legend surely wants to land on a team contending for the Stanley Cup, similar to how the Wild traded for Fleury a few years ago when he was on a struggling Blackhawks team. So that begs to question, who would be in the running for Fleury, should he become available? LeBrun listed five teams that make sense.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Edmonton Oilers
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • New Jersey Devils
  • Colorado Avalanche

Fleury is a free agent after this season, and at 39-years-old, retirement could be after that. The Wild aren’t expecting to get much in a trade, as it would be more about doing Fleury a favor, as he approaches retirement.

Will the second-winningest goalie in NHL history be traded before March 8? If they start winning, then no. But if the losing continues, bye bye Marc-Andre Fleury.

Since, the hype surrounding Wallstedt has gradually built up steam.

Jesper Wallstedt: Minnesota Wild Goalie of the Future

At 19 years old (July 2022), Wallstedt was named the No. 1 overall goalie prospect in the world by The Athletic and his takeover as the Minnesota Wild’s starting netminder is only a matter of time, no matter how well Filip Gustavsson played this season or next.

But now, the Gus Bus is hurt and won’t be returning anytime soon. Obviously, Bill Guerin and his new head coach, John Hynes, do not expect or want Marc-Andre Fleury in net for all of the Wild’s games in his absence. So, questions have risen surrounding whether or not we could see Wallstedt in St. Paul earlier than expected.

And it sounds like the answer to that question is yes. In fact, it seems like Jesper’s recent injury issues are the only thing keeping him in the AHL, as of Saturday morning. Wallstedt returned from his injury last night and did not play particularly well. Still, it doesn’t seem like Minnesota decision makers are overly concerned.

Michael Russo (The Athletic) tweeted on Saturday that it “Sure feels like Wallstedt’s NHL debut is closing in”.

Even after a difficult return to action last night, Jesper Wallstedt’s numbers tell the story about how good the kid is and why the Minnesota Wild organization is so excited about him. In 19 appearances this season, the 21-year-old goalie is touting a .918 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average, both good for 3rd best in the AHL among goalies who have started 18 or more games.

Both are improvements over his already impressive AHL start in 2022-23, where he allowed 2.68 goals per game and touted a .908 save percentage, which both hover around top-10 in the league among AHL goalies with 35 or more games played last season.
