Yesterday, it was reported by Tom Pelissero, among others, that the long wait for Mike Zimmer’s contract extension was over. Zimmer, who is the third winningest coach in Minnesota Vikings history, would get his much deserved payday. Now, Courtney Cronin (ESPN) is reporting that GM Rick Spielman is about to join Zim’s extension party.

The Zim and Rick Connection

Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman’s contracts currently have an identical run date, and it appears that will again be the case. This is for good reason. With Spielman and Zimmer at the helm, the Vikings have a record of 46-33-1, reaching the playoffs three times, winning two games.

Spielman gets credit for many great acquisitions of talent, since he took control of personnel in 2011. This talent includes stars Danielle Hunter, Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr. Not to mention free agent signings, Adam Thielen (UDFA) and Kirk Cousins.

Clearly, There has long been great collaboration and harmony between Spielman and Zimmer. Keeping them together and compensated handsomely only seems right.

What It Would Mean

Now, Spielman and Zimmer’s contracts would go through the 2023 season, when the deals gets done. This allows ample time for Spielman to continue stockpiling more talent and keeping this team in contention. This offseason, the Minnesota Vikings have been in a state of slight retooling. They have turned the page on numerous defensive stalwarts in an attempt to hopefully extend their championship window by infusing youth.

Now, the decision to extend both allows for the organization to keep developing as a group, while maintaining stability that will hopefully lead to an eventual championship. Rightfully, the duo garners much respect around the league.

Although, there would be a level of job security for Spielman, the pressure rises. Hopefully he is more motivated to do whatever it takes to improve the personnel that the Minnesota Vikings have. He should be able to flush the talent level on Zimmer’s staff. This will allow the team to be in better positions to succeed going forward.

However you view it, this development is a step in the right direction. Stability and fewer distractions will come from this signing.
