The Minnesota Wild completed the biggest trade in franchise history on Friday night, shipping the equivalent of four first round draft picks to Vancouver, in exchange for one of the best defenseman in the league, 26-year-old Quinn Hughes.

Once the Canucks started getting serious about moving their best player, the Quinn Hughes sweepstakes came down to which offer would be most enticing to Vancouver.

What we’ve found out, in the hours since Friday’s blockbuster was consummated, is that a handful of teams were bidding on the 2023-24 Norris Trophy winner, along with the MN Wild.

According to Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic), three other offers (Devils, Red Wings, Rangers) were being seriously considered, along with Minnesota’s. Two others (Canes, Sabres) were in the running until the very end.

No doubt, president of hockey operations Bill Guerin paid the piper for Hughes, giving up Minnesota’s 2026 first round pick, along with 2024 No. 12 overall pick, Zeev Buium (20 y/o), 2020 No. 9 overall pick, Marco Rossi (24 y/o) and 2022 No. 19 overall pick, Liam Ohgren (21 y/o).

The cost may have been high, you can’t control the market. Per Emily Kaplan (ESPN), the Vancouver Canucks let teams know recently that they were open for business on pending free agents. Naturally, that led to conversations about Hughes, who is due to be a free agent at the end of 2026-27.

Last season, Quinn Hughes potted 15 goals for the second-straight season. The former Michigan star has posted 75+ points each of the past three years, including 92 points in 2023-24, the same season he won the Norris Trophy.
