On Thursday evening, the Minnesota Wild will take the ice at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul for Game 6 of their first round playoff series against the Dallas Stars up 3-2.

That means Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, Quinn Hughes and the boys have an opportunity tonight to knock their division rival out of postseason contention, and advance beyond the first round of the NHL Playoffs for the first time since 2014-15.

Jonas Brodin injury update – MN Wild vs Stars (Gm. 6)

Unfortunately, as I predicted on Wednesday, they’ll have to do it without ol’ trusty defenseman Jonas Brodin. This morning, head coach John Hynes confirmed that the 32-year-old veteran blue-liner will sit out Game 6 after a shot off the leg forced him out of game 5 and did not return.

Trade deadline pickup Jeff Petry will play in Brodin’s place, next to Zach Bogosian.

Jonas Brodin has never been the type of defenseman who produces points. When he was in his prime, Brodin was a shutdown blue-liner who ate minutes and you never had to worry about being out of position or getting beat, no matter who he was defending.

Because Brodin’s top physical skill is his skating, an injury to his lower leg or foot area could be a major problem for the former No. 10 overall draft pick (2011) does well on the ice. Let’s just hope the MN Wild can win tonight, advance, then get Brodin back in the lineup for game one in Colorado.

Wild toss Brink, insert Nico Sturm

In other news, Bobby Brink will be a healthy scratch tonight, replaced by Nico Sturm — who will center the two Folignos, according to what Hynes told The Athletic beat writer, Joe Smith.

Sturm was playing well (4 hits, 1 assist, 0 +/-), before he was scratched in Game 5, with the return of Mats Zuccarello and Yakov Trenin. Brink was not impressive on Tuesday, which is why Nico is getting another chance.
