It took the Minnesota Wild quite some time to get the Kirill Kaprizov contract extension done. The offseason took shape as sort of a low burn. Nico Sturm was brought back and Vladimir Tarasenko joined the squad.

After Bill Guerin ultimately got the richest contract in NHL history done, he apparently decided to go on something of a spending spree. The Wild now have their veteran goal locked down for the long term.

Filip Gustavsson sticking around for Minnesota Wild

After two years in Ottawa, Filip Gustavsson joined the Minnesota Wild. He has experienced highs and lows wearing the sweater, but ultimately he has been a steadying veteran presence. Now he’ll stick around for the next half-decade.

John Hynes goes into this season with Gustavsson as his cemented veteran starter. Youngster Jesper Wallstedt will pair with him, and the Swedes ideally will push each other.

Gustavsson has played in 169 games across his career, and has logged 142 of them with the Wild. He has a career .913 save percentage, and his .914 save percentage last season was a tick up from that. His first season with Minnesota included a career-best .931 save percentage, and career-low 2.10 goals against average.

This season is a pivotal one for the Wild and Gustavsson in net. Marc Andre Fleury has since retired and Wallstedt is an unproven commodity. Last season Gustavsson’s goalie goal, at the urging of the future Hall of Famer, was a highlight.

The $6.8 million average annual value checks in just outside of the top ten across NHL goaltenders. It’s still a sizeable raise for the Minnesota netminder, and while the Wild have cap space, they still need to add talent going forward if they intend to bring a Stanley Cup to St. Paul.

Minnesota kicks off their regular season on Thursday October 9 in St. Louis against the Blues.
