Short-Lived MN Vikings CB1 is Retiring

The Minnesota Vikings dove into free agency this offseason by adding cornerback James Pierre. That is the only move of significance they have made externally this offseason.
Pierre was a necessary addition after Jeff Okudah flopped and wasn’t a consideration to return after his one-year deal. Two years ago the Vikings landed two-time All-Pro Stephon Gilmore on a one-year deal, and he showed well in his lone season wearing purple.
After not playing for anyone last year, Gilmore is calling it a career.
Stephon Gilmore retiring after last playing for Minnesota Vikings
Last season the Minnesota Vikings opted against bringing back 35-year-old Stephon Gilmore. Instead they did a new deal with Byron Murphy Jr. and brought in Isaiah Rodgers to be their CB2. In 2024 it was Gilmore that operated as CB1. Now away from the game for a season, he has officially announced his retirement.

While it’s logical that Gilmore could have more in the tank after being productive in 15 games for Minnesota in 2024, he is now 35 years old. No team came calling after he elected free agency last spring, and Gilmore can now focus on other pursuits.
In 15 games with the Minnesota Vikings, the former Super Bowl champion picked off a single pass. It was significant though, as it sealed a victory in London against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets. He also had nine passes defended and 56 tackles.

During the 2019 season Gilmore was named the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year. Unfortunately that New England Patriots team lost in the Wild Card Round against the Tennessee Titans.
The Vikings paid Gilmore $7 million for his lone season in Minnesota. He leaves the game having earned more than $122.6 million over the course of his 13-year career. As the Buffalo Bills 10th overall pick in 2012, he more than lived up to expectations.
