Vikings Interested in Underwhelming QB Reunion?

I feel like I have written pretty much this same Minnesota Vikings introduction for the last month, which makes sense since the Vikings’ 2026 offseason revolves around one main mission and that’s finding a legitimate veteran quarterback to either push or replace JJ McCarthy.

But no matter how badly they all want to come here, the Vikings are limited to trading for their new QB, if they want him in the building before NFL free agency begins in March.

Technically, they do have one veteran free agent they could approach now, since he is still a member of the organization until the league year turns over next month.

And in a piece this weekend at the Star Tribune, Vikings insider Ben Goessling writes that, not only was Carson Wentz happy to act as a human shield for JJ McCarthy and Max Brosmer last season, but Kevin O’Connell & Co. are seriously considering bringing the former NDSU superstar back for round two.

Apparently, taking the beating he did last year behind a tattered MN Vikings o-line only made Wentz more attractive this offseason to potential suitors.

And according to Goessling, it’s plausible no team was more impressed than the Vikings, themselves — which is why the 33-year-old sounds like a legitimate option for them in 2026, as well.

“As the ethics of playing Wentz through his painful left shoulder injury became a topic of national discussion in October, sources said one of the reasons the quarterback carried no ill will toward the Vikings was because his stint as the team’s starter might help him earn a contract in 2026. Could that contract be with the Vikings? It’s possible, though the team might circle back to Wentz after considering its options at QB. Assuming Wentz, 33, plays in 2026, he’d likely do so on a one-year deal.”

Let’s hope the Vikings don’t get Carson Wentz desperate…

As Ben notes, that’s unlikely to happen, since Carson Wentz will probably still be there waiting for them, should they fail to land a better quarterback option between now and the early portion of free agency.

The 2016 No. 2 overall draft pick is no longer on the superstar trajectory he once enjoyed early in his NFL career. Still, Wentz has now compiled 10-years in the league, playing in over 100 NFL games (99 starts) and tossing for over 23,000 yards and 150 touchdowns.

However, we found out last year that — while Wentz may have been the best option between he, McCarthy and Brosmer — he is not the type of QB we can realistically project leading the MN Vikings on a deep playoff run.

In other words, let’s all hope we do not get to a point this offseason where Carson Wentz is starting to look attractive. If that time comes… then this is going to be yet another LOOOOONNNNNGGGG NFL season in Minnesota.
