Pat Shurmur Likely 1.5-and-Done w/Vikings; Interviewing for New Jobs This Week

There ain’t no bender like a Minnesota Vikings bender. Just between the two of us, I’m strung out as hell on Purple Pride. Apparently, that’s what happens when the Vikings clinch a playoff bye and roll a 13-3 season. I feel like I need Purple Drank injected directly into my veins right now. The positivity surrounding this team right now is palpable…

However, every rose has its thorn right? Even a 13-3 rose. As for one of those thorns for our Vikings? Teams want to poach our entire coaching staff. The most prime target for outside teams? Offensive Coordinator/Guru, Pat Shurmur, who has been the SKOL Offensive Coordinator for about 1.5 seasons, since Norv Turner called it quits half-way through last year.

As reported above, the Giants, Cardinals, Lions, and Bears are all scheduled to interview our Offensive Coordinator, in regards to their respective head coaching positions.

First and foremost, good for Shurmur. With his only previous head gig (interim HC w/Eagles for a game) coming with the Browns (2011-12), it’s obvious he wants another opportunity. You really can’t blame him. Hell, even Bill Belichick even got fired by the franchise that Art Modell originated, which has become its own name-colored stain on the proverbial underwear of this league.

Check out Pro Football Talk with the jokes! I like that. Let’s have some fun. Maybe people plan on loosening up a little bit in 2018. Who knows?

With the Vikings off this weekend, the game plan is for Shurmur to meet with the four interested teams later this week.

Interview Schedule:

  • ThursdayDetriot Lions & Arizona Cardinals
  • FridayChicago Bears
  • SaturdayNew York Giants

Come Sunday, it’s business as usual. By then, the 52 year-old should be freed up to start game-planning for Minnesota’s first playoff opponent.

It’s not an ideal situation, but it’s how things work. The 49ers current head coach, Kyle Shannahon, was in a very similar situation last year, when he was Atlanta’s OC. Despite the brief chaos in his life, that Falcons team still found themselves in the Super Bowl.

Ted Thomson Removed as Green Bay Packers’ General Manager:

As the Vikings’ personnel is preparing to move up in the NFL world, the Packer staff is moving down. It was announced on Tuesday that Ted Thompson would be transitioning (demoted) from “GM and Director of Football Operations” to “Senior VP of Operations”. His replacement as GM is yet to be announced.

Actually, this kind-of sucks. If Thompson remained in that role, upon Aaron Rodgers retirement, the MN/GB rivalry had two decades of Purple dominance written all over it.

In closing, best of luck to Pat Shurmur in his upcoming interviews. Wherever he may end up next season, let’s hope he puts the proverbial bow on his tenure with Minnesota.
