Minnesota Vikings Awarded Top Comp Pick

The start of the 2026 NFL free agent negotiating period came and went on Monday, along with over $1 billion in reported contract guarantees, of which the Minnesota Vikings accounted for just $4 million.
New head exec, Rob Brzezinski’s only unofficial signing of the day was for former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback James Pierre. The Vikings also lost punter Ryan Wright and wide receiver Jalen Nailor to New Orleans and Las Vegas, respectively.
From a pure math standpoint, the Minnesota front office actually has more work to do filling roster holes, between now and the start of training camp, than they did before the legal tampering window opened this morning.
Minnesota Vikings awarded No. 1 compensatory pick in 2026 NFL Draft
However, the MN Vikings do have one more draft pick this afternoon, after the NFL released its final list of 2026 compensatory picks Monday. If you squint and look to the very top of Rapoport‘s list, you’ll see the Vikings sitting at the very top, with pick No. 97 overall — the first overall comp pick in the draft.

The NFL’s compensatory draft pick formula is a convoluted math equation that nobody fully understands. Comp picks are applied at the very END of the draft round in which they are assigned to, so the Vikings’ first overall comp pick will be on the clock after all of the 32 standard picks are made in the third round.
The formula was created to help teams stripped of the most talent in free agency by awarding them with more draft picks the following offseason. So this year’s comp picks are being assigned based on the top free agent arrivals and departures from this time last year.
Essentially, the formula goes like this: [2025 top talent lost in FA] – [2025 top talent gained in FA] = combination of late 3rd to 4th round draft picks in 2026
Losing Sam Darnold landed Vikings the top comp pick
And when you see how the formula actually broke down for the Minnesota Vikings (OverTheCap.com), it’s a bittersweet reality. They had a total of NINE free agents from last offseason who factored into their comp pick formula for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
Eight of the nine cancelled each other out, leaving Seahawks Super Bowl winner Sam Darnold as the lone Vikings free agent who counted toward the final comp pick draft order. Obviously, his huge season is why they landed the top compensatory pick.
