This offseason the Minnesota Vikings have plenty of roster decisions to sort out. None of them are more important than righting the 2025 wrongs at quarterback.

As things stand, Kyler Murray wants to wear the purple and gold, after he was notified Tuesday by the Arizona Cardinals of his imminent release. According to most reports, Murray is the favorite to land in Minnesota, where he would be brought in to “compete” with JJ McCarthy.

MN Vikings miracle man Stefon Diggs headed for free agency

Joining Kyler Murray in the the free agency pool when it opens on a week from today (March 11) will be former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, who is being released by the New England Patriots.

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Stefon Diggs spent the first five years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings. He was the guy on the receiving end of the Minneapolis Miracle, and became one of the NFL’s best pass-catchers while wearing purple and gold.

Diggs spent four years in Buffalo, after the Vikings traded him there for a first round draft pick that eventually became Justin Jefferson. Then, he went to Houston, before landing in New England last season, where he provided a skilled veteran route runner for Drake Maye.

Although Diggs posted 1,013 yards on 85 receptions during his only season with the New England Patriots, the story is not complete without distractions. That has often been the case with the embattled MN Vikings star, and he didn’t have the cleanest exit here either.

In September it was reported that Diggs was having a baby with rap superstar Cardi B. Less than three months later he was being charged with a felony. Cardi B, Diggs’ now ex-girlfriend left him at the Super Bowl after performing at halftime with Bad Bunny. She has since taken aim at him while on tour.

After injury caused Diggs to play in just eight games with the Texans, he played in every game this year for New England. The production was his lowest full-season mark since 2017 thought.

Diggs’ Patriots career comes to an end after a Super Bowl loss against former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold and the Seahawks. He hauled in three catches for 37 yards in the contest.

Don’t expect MN Vikings to call on Stefon Diggs

Despite signing a three-year deal worth $63.5 million last offseason, Diggs lasted just one season with the Patriots. The contract was structured to allow for an out after year one.

New England paid Diggs just over $21.5 million, and will incur an $11.4 million dead cap hit. He leaves more than $50 million on the table after the release, and won’t be likely to see another significant payday this time around.

The Minnesota Vikings could be considered a suitor with the departure of Jalen Nailor. However, imagining Diggs to play third fiddle behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison is essentially laughable. He doesn’t have the temperament for that role.

It shouldn’t be hard for Diggs to find a prove-it deal, something around the $5-10 million range for one year. He’ll play most of next season at 32 years old, and is still a crafty veteran if he can get with the program for an organization.
