Of Course the Vikings are Going to Activate Daniel Jones

Two months ago, NFL pundits looked at the NFC North and came away with mostly one conclusion. If the Minnesota Vikings wanted any chance at winning the division, they’d probably have to win out.
Nine-straight wins later, the 14-2 Vikings have a chance to prove all of those doubters wrong by going into Detroit and beating the 14-2 Lions, to win the best division in football and the No. 1 seed in the NFC. It’s also possible Minnesota has a new quarterback suited up on the sideline at Ford Field on Sunday night.
Minnesota Vikings “will discuss” activating Daniel Jones
According to multiple reports, “the Vikings will discuss” whether or not they will sign Daniel Jones to the active roster for week 18 vs the Lions.
Kevin O'Connell said the Vikings will discuss whether to add QB Daniel Jones to the 53-man roster this week, which would put him into their compensatory pick formula if he signs elsewhere in free agency. O'Connell said coaches haven't talked about how that might impact QB depth.

There are times when news reports make sense, and there are times when they don’t. When it comes to the above reporting, it’s a little of both. Yes, it would make sense to activate Daniel Jones off the practice squad for Sunday. In fact, the move is so obvious that I’m not sure why it is being reported as a “maybe”.
Why wouldn’t the Vikings activate Jones
If the Minnesota Vikings activate Jones, he will count as part of this offseason’s NFL Draft compensation pick formula. As a borderline starting QB, the 27-year-old is likely to earn general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah & Co. an additional day two draft pick in 2026, if he were to sign somewhere else in free agency.
- Daniel Jones career stats: 69 Starts | 24-44-1 record | 64.1 Cmp % | 14, 582 Yds | 70 TD | 47 INT
Should the Vikings choose not to activate Jones this weekend, and he were to end up with a different team this offseason, they will not receive a comp pick. For a team that is extremely low on draft picks the next few seasons, there is no logical reason to not activate Jones, right?
What is the downside to activating Daniel Jones for one week? If Jones is ready enough, then just have him take Nick Mullens spot on the active roster. If you feel a need to keep another backup QB active, then deactivate a 7th EDGE rusher or 6th cornerback.

Again, why are we even questioning whether or not this will happen? I will be shocked if the Minnesota Vikings do not have their newest quarterback on the week 18 active roster. Because it doesn’t make sense not to.
