Minnesota Sports Battered Fan Syndrome

After the Vikings most recent failure we now stand on the brink of a very bleak winter:

  • The Wild are floundering
  • The Wolves are a roller coaster
  • The Twins are….quietly awaiting another season of not being good enough.

So, it’s the perfect time for us to take a deep dive into our Minnesota misery.

As the calendar flips to 2019, I want to take a look at which pro team in Minnesota has hurt us the most. 

 (HINT: It’s the Vikings)

 However, I’m not a total masochist so we’re only going back to 2000. Let us bathe in Minnesota misery together.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings have a very decorated resume of postseason failures. From no-show NFC Title games in 2000 and 2017 –TO– Brett Favre and that godawful interception against New Orleans –TO– Blair Walsh shanking a chip shot field goal in 2015, the Vikings have set us up to watch them fall time and time again.

I’ll give credit where it’s due. The Vikings gave us one of the best playoff moments in Minnesota sports history in 2017 when the Minneapolis Miracle happened but they by far have given us the biggest source of heartbreak. The ones you love the most hurt you the most, I guess.

 The Wild take the second spot on this list by sheer playoff volume alone. After advancing to the Conference Finals 2 years after they joined the league, the Wild have not been back since. They’ve had several successful seasons but everything falls apart come playoff time. It seems like the current roster has peaked. Will the Wild begin to take a step back and revamp the lineup? Might not be a bad idea considering the current state of the rest of the western conference (stacked AF).

Minnesota Twins

 The Twins have hurt us in a different way since 2000. While the Vikings and Wild have dominated the “playoff disappointment” scale, the Twins have hurt us by largely not being relevant in the postseason picture at all. And when they have gotten in, they’ve  been mostly no shows. They are currently riding a 10 (!) consecutive playoff loss streak and counting. Hopefully Rocco Baldelli can get the team back on track but as they currently sit it’s going to be hard to stay invested if they stumble through April.

 The Timberwolves are the winter version of the Twins.

After dominating the early part of the 2000’s they have fallen to irrelevance that lasted for 14 years. After one season of “playoff fame” the Wolves have since traded Jimmy Butler and are in danger of missing the playoffs again this season. As with the Twins, if the Wolves aren’t relevant people largely stop paying attention. A sustained playoff run would do wonders but the Wolves are not nearly as much of a heartbreak as the Vikings have been.

To be fair to the Vikings, none of our pro teams have really done much to give us any source of hope. With 2018 over, perhaps our luck will change.
