Kurt Benkert Loves This QB to Vikings

There’s nothing more important for the Minnesota Vikings this offseason than fixing their starting quarterback situation. With Kwesi Adofo-Mensah now out of the picture, all eyes are on Kevin O’Connell… as is the pressure.

This offseason will fall on the shoulders of O’Connell and Brian Flores, with cap god Rob Brzezinski acting as the facilitator of their player pursuits.

We know for sure that the MN Vikings plan to bring in an established veteran quarterback that can either take over or, at the least, push JJ McCarthy this summer.

Which QB fits that mold best, is up for debate, as is the availability for some of the names who have been linked to Minnesota. So far, we’ve seen the Vikings attached to a bevy of names, from Joe Burrow to Kirk Cousins and beyond.

Kyler Murray seems perfect for Minnesota Vikings

One intriguing candidate throughout the early QB hunting process is currently employed out in the desert. But if the Arizona Cardinals indeed move on from Kyler Murray, like most expect them to, there’s little doubt the Vikings will at least kick his 28-year-old tires.

And that is exactly what former Green Bay Packers quarterback turned YouTube star, Kurt Benkert, likes to hear. How do we know? Benkert said so himself on Tuesday morning when he tweeted that Murray “would be incredible for the Vikings”.

Murray played in just five games last season as he dealt with injuries once again. He has played just one full regular season (2024) in the last five years. Not only is durability a concern, but so is his dedication, which has been regularly called into question over the course of his seven-year NFL career.

When Murray is on the field, his dynamic talent is undeniable. The former Offensive Rookie of the Year winner owns a career 67.1% completion rate through 87 career games, which might surprise some people.

He’s also thrown 121 touchdowns vs 60 interceptions. Obviously his athleticism shows while scrambling, but it does open him up to take additional hits. But what might excite those inside MN Vikings facilities most about the former Texas A&M and Oklahoma superstar, is the threat he brings, not just with his arm, but his legs too.

Adding Murray to the Minnesota Vikings roster would give the franchise a dynamic weapon at quarterback that they haven’t had since, maybe, Daunte Culpepper.

Can MN Vikings afford a swing for Murray

Right now the Minnesota Vikings have cap issues to figure out. Those seem relatively straightforward though, and should be manageable. Murray carries a $52 million number in 2026 though, and has a $43 million cap hit in 2027.

The Cardinals aren’t likely to cut Murray and absorb a $54 million dead cap number. A trade would leave them with just under $18 million in dead cap, and the Vikings would theoretically be doing Arizona a favor.

Murray is due a roster bonus on March 16th, but trading for him may open the door to Arizona absorbing some of that given the overall level of relief. The MN Vikings would need to present real value for Murray, but if they pick up the phone, Arizona will unquestionably be willing to listen.

In other words — for the average fan wondering whether or not Kyler Murray is a legitimate option for the Vikings — you shouldn’t worry too much about the financial numbers. Just know the MN Vikings have more flexibility in that department this offseason, than what the mainstream narrative is selling.
