4 Ideal Landing Spots for Joshua Dobbs in 2024
Coming into last Sunday’s 31-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons, Joshua Dobbs had started ten games in the NFL, but it was the one he didn’t start that turned him into a sudden star.
Dobbs’ comeback victory with the Minnesota Vikings last weekend, not only placed him in the NFL record books as the first player to tally three touchdowns in back-to-back weeks for two different teams, but he was also named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
This is a bonkers scramble by Joshua Dobbs.

Josh Dobbs earning future payday somewhere
Prior to joining the Vikings, Joshua Dobbs hadn’t experienced much success this season, starting for an Arizona Cardinals team expected to be the worst team in the NFL. But the 28-year-old wasn’t the reason for their woes, either, especially considering he had just arrived in Arizona 17 days before the team’s season opener.
Instead, Dobbs was praised for his intelligence, quickly learning yet another offensive system despite having zero live reps with his new team, much like we’ve now seen in Minnesota, only not to the same extremes.
Half of one season may be a small sample size, but Dobbs’ play in 2023 reportedly has him set up for a big payday this offseason, when the former fourth-round pick is set to hit free agency. According to an executive of a team in the AFC, Dobbs “has earned high-level No. 2 status” as a backup QB, and is in line for “pretty good money” on his next contract.
But which teams make the most sense for Dobbs as a free agent? While there’s a long road ahead, here are four teams that could be an ideal fit for the current Vikings QB.

The New England Patriots’ future at quarterback is very much unsettled. Mac Jones hasn’t been the obvious franchise QB he was drafted to be. With Jones leading the NFL’s second-worst scoring offense thus far, there’s no guarantee he returns to New England next season.
Even though he’s set to see a large increase over his $1.5 million salary from this season, barring a really strong finish, Dobbs won’t receive starter-level money as a free agent. That makes him a relatively low-cost solution for a team seeking improved production at QB. That’s what the Patriots are all about.

Atlanta Falcons Bring Dobbs Back to Georgia
Dobbs is now on his seventh NFL team. He’s played for four of them. Yet, despite his well-traveled career, he’s yet to join his home team, the Atlanta Falcons. Although he ironically just robbed a win from the team he grew up rooting for, Dobbs could make a lot of sense for the Falcons, especially if Arthur Smith sticks around.
The Falcons are already a dangerous rushing offense thanks to Smith’s scheme, which takes advantage of playmakers such as Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, but Dobbs could bring yet another element to this ground game. Like the other teams on this list, Atlanta’s QB future is cloudy, but Dobbs has shown he can be an above-average option who can help win with his arm or his legs without making a mess of mistakes.

New York Giants Use Dobbs as a Bridge QB
Daniel Jones just suffered a torn ACL, meaning his timeline to return is similar to Kyler Murray’s, who suffered a similar injury in Dec. 2022. This not only leaves the Giants wrecked for the rest of this season but also for a large part of 2024 as well. With no long-term backup on the roster, the Giants are guaranteed to add a QB during the offseason. It may come during the draft, it may come during free agency, where Dobbs could make sense.
Dobbs offers a QB with a high floor, and without a capable solution in place, the Giants will have a hard time recruiting top offensive talent. If the Giants are still sold on returning to Jones late during the 2024 season, Dobbs provides a respectable bridge.

Of course, another option is for Dobbs to stay right where he is, with the Vikings. Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles, which puts the 35-year-old on a long road to recovery. There are suggestions that coach Kevin O’Connell would love to have the sixth-year Vikings QB return, but there are a lot of teams who could be enticed by the four-time Pro Bowl QB in free agency.
Plus, who’s to say that GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah isn’t ready to find the team’s QB of the future in the 2024 NFL Draft? If so, Dobbs, like Cousins, would be a great role model to learn from for any young prospect entering the pros. He’s already won over the locker room. As he makes more starts, he’ll also have chemistry with the receivers, a great understanding of the offense, and if the season goes well, he’ll have won over the fanbase for good too.
It just might lead to a perfect storm where, when given a host of options to choose from, there’s no other place Dobbs would rather be than in Minnesota, with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and the rest of the Vikings talents on offense.
