All the talk surrounding the Minnesota Vikings this offseason revolves around what they plan to do at quarterback. After putting all of their eggs into the JJ McCarthy basket last season, the Vikings are trying to avoid the same mistakes in 2026.

What we learned at the NFL scouting combine is that the Vikings will bring competition of some sort into the QB room. The question at this point is what caliber quarterback they are seeking.

Depending on where you look or who you ask, head coach Kevin O’Connell and his staff are either looking for someone who can challenge McCarthy or replace him — an answer that only time can seemingly give us.

JJ McCarthy on the outs for Minnesota Vikings

However, the most recent report out of Indianapolis comes via longtime NFL insider, Tony Pauline, who posted an article Saturday at Essentially Sports that has the Minnesota Vikings “quietly exploring an exit strategy” for JJ McCarthy.

The Minnesota Vikings are quietly exploring an exit strategy for 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, according to multiple league sources…The consensus opinion here at the Combine is that the Vikings are in the market for a new starting quarterback. In fact, a source tells me the team is really down on quarterback J.J. McCarthy and is ready to move on from their 2024 first-round pick. The team will bring in another signal caller to compete and eventually replace McCarthy, who was the 10th selection of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Across just 10 games last season, McCarthy completed only 57.6% of his passes. He had an 11/12 TD/INT ratio, and often struggled to get his best playmaker, Justin Jefferson, the ball.

Could the MN Vikings really be preparing to give up on JJ, while they publicly tell the football world that they still believe in their third year quarterback out of Michigan? If so, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.

It would, however, be quite damning for an organization that less than two years ago, after McCarthy tore his meniscus, announced the now 23-year-old as the quarterback of the future.

The Minnesota Vikings invested significant draft capital and time in McCarthy, underwriting they won’t get back in a trade when his stock is down like it is right now. However, if they’ve decided JJ is unlikely to reach the ceiling they once placed on him, it’s better to cut bait now than it is to hang on even longer.

Vikings may have no choice to move McCarthy

In Indianapolis during the NFL Combine, head coach Kevin O’Connell suggested that Minnesota’s timeline no longer aligns with that of McCarthy’s development. This team was built to win in 2025 and that didn’t happen.

The Wilfs are patient… until you start missing the playoffs, something that KOC is learning on the job quickly this offseason. If his seat isn’t hot now, he knows it will be with another unproductive season.

It’s important to remember that McCarthy is still younger than most of the quarterbacks he’s regularly compared to like Bo Nix (26), Michael Penix (25) and Caleb Williams (24). Nonetheless, the Minnesota Vikings may not have time to wait for him to grow up.
