MN Vikings Bring in Veteran QB for Workout

When the Minnesota Vikings took the field on Friday night against the Tennessee Titans, they did so with Max Brosmer under center for two of the four quarters.
With the preseason opportunity, the undrafted free agent out of Minnesota took full advantage yet again, cementing his 53-man roster spot and even challenging for QB2, behind JJ McCarthy. At this point, there is no way he’d clear waivers.
Despite Brosmer exhibition electricity, however, it’s still risky for the MN Vikings to enter the regular season with two quarterbacks who have never played a regular season snap in the NFL.
The guy brought in to be McCarthy’s backup, Sam Howell — who has 5-years of NFL experience, including 18 starts under his belt — has been arguably Minnesota’s fourth best quarterback on the Vikings roster during training camp. His demise is the biggest reason why this roster has QB questions, in the first place.

Brett Rypien is who we thought he was — a 28-year-old journeyman QB3, and a candidate for the practice squad after he clears waivers. How the MN Vikings’ 2025 quarterback room shakes out is still TBD. But on Saturday, they brought in a familiar QB, Carson Wentz, to see if he represents an upgrade over Brosmer and the gang.

O’Connell has plenty of game type to indicate what Carson Wentz should be capable of. This workout will allow the Vikings’ head coach to put the former NDSU star through the QB ringer, in order to see if he’s a good candidate for KOC’s QB rehabilitation program.
Wentz was selected as the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He made the Pro Bowl and finished third in the MVP race during his second season, as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, his career has been a rollercoaster ever since.
Where has Carson Wentz been?
Short of his 2019 Comeback Player of the Year Award, life in the NFL has largely been downhill for Wentz, since 2016. He’s had single-season stops with the Colts, Commanders, Rams, and Chiefs. Since starting all 17 games as the Colts 2021 stopgap, Wentz has played in just 13 games (nine starts) over the last three employers.
Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, winning 11 regular season games. He was not on the field during the playoffs, unfortunately. Instead, it was Nick Foles who quarterbacked Philly to the Lombardi, after Wentz suffered a torn-ACL late in the season.

Across his nine years in the NFL, Wentz has played in 98 games (94 starts). He’s thrown for 22,410 yards (62.7%), 153 touchdowns and 67 interceptions.
He hasn’t had much success during the second-half of his career, but on paper, Wentz should provide an upgrade at backup, behind JJ McCarthy, compared to Howell, Rypien and even Brosmer. But we’ll see if that’s how Kevin O’Connell feels after this workout.
The Vikings must set their 53-man roster by Tuesday at 3pm CDT. On top of finding a more experienced and reliable QB2, Minnesota is still searching for help at wide receiver — where they have been linked to fan-favorite Adam Thielen — and possibly in the secondary.
