Bridgewater Flipped From Jets to Saints for a 3rd Round Pick

With the final week of preseason football upon us and teams trying to trim their rosters down to 53, the Jets sent former Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the New Orleans Saints.

Seeing Bridgewater head to the Saints is definitely weird considering the history New Orleans and Minnesota have, stemming back to Bountygate in 2009-2010. But this scenario actually makes a ton of sense for Bridgewater. While Saints QB Drew Brees has shown tremendous durability during his career, any sort of injury to Brees could have derailed their chance at a playoff run. While Bridgewater is no Brees, and is only signed to a 1 year deal, he represents a clear upgrade over what the Saints other QB options were. Plus I’m not going to bet against anyone who can come back from nearly losing a leg.

What’s Next for Teddy and the Saints:

Also, let’s remember how important 3rd round picks are to NFL Franchises. We aren’t talking back-of-the-draft-type currency. A third round pick tells me that Drew Brees might be saying farewell to the NFL after this season. I’d expect a contract extension at some point, for Teddy, as long as he impresses once he gets in the door. Couple that with a Brees retirement after the year, and Teddy will have himself another starting opportunity… what a story.

Teddy has gone through a lot already in his young career, but all you need to know about how Vikings fans felt about him can be summarized below. Teddy made his return to the field against the Bengals in a blowout Vikings win and was greeted with massive cheers from the crowd and, more importantly, his teammates:

So hate the team he now plays for all you want. But damn I’m going to be rooting for him when he finally gets another chance, as long as it isn’t against the Vikings later this year.
