We’re less than two weeks away from the start of NFL free agency. Barring a contract extension, Kirk Cousins will become an unrestricted free agent for just the second time in his 12-year career.

While the Minnesota Vikings would still like to retain their four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, he’s also set to begin free agency as the best player available at his position. Simply put talents like Captain Kirk don’t hit the open market often, so the price for his services likely won’t be low, even after tearing his Achilles at the age of 35.

One team we’ve frequently heard linked to Cousins is the Atlanta Falcons, who boast a young group of skilled position players on offense, but lack a franchise QB. Not to mention, the Cousins family does have some ties to the Atlanta area, or so we’ve heard.

In other words, the possibility of Cousins departing Minnesota for Atlanta has felt legitimate for awhile. There have been some reports early on at the combine, however, that Kirk may not get the offers he’s expecting while his agent shops him at the combine.

But that was way back when (yesterday) many thought Atlanta was closing in on Justin Fields. Falcons + Fields rumors were so thick on Wednesday that his next landing spot was taken off most betting boards.

One day later, though, in classic combine rumor mill fashion, the word on the Indy street is that Kirk will indeed be swooned by the Falcons, after all. That they’d much rather have Cousins than Fields. All signs point to the Falcons being one of, if not the most aggressive team pursuing a Cousins contract this offseason.

The latest sign comes via local ABC sports reporter Zach Klein on the Atlanta based Carl Dukes and Mike Bell radio show on 92.9 The Game.

“Everybody I’ve talked to says the logical thing is to go with a veteran move. All eyes, all arrows, everything is pointed toward Kirk Cousins. Arthur Blank has basically told his front office staff, ‘Do what you gotta do. Pay what you gotta pay. Get this done.’ So everybody I’ve talked to, from agents, to other coaches and scouts, guys around the league. What they are hearing is that the Falcons will put all their attention on Kirk Cousins.”

If the Falcons truly are planning to put the full-court press on signing Cousins, the Vikings may have stiffer competition than they expected. Now that he’s been able to get himself fitted for a grill, Kirk is hoping he can pay for it with a fresh $100 million contract.

But when it comes to which team gives him the best opportunity to win, while having plenty of weapons at his disposal: a bright offensive mind, a nice payday, and top-ranked treatment, good luck topping the Vikings.
