Twins Players Try to Pronounce “Mahtomedi”

The Minnesota Twins are only a week or so from leaving Fort Myers and completing a lockout-shortened 2022 Spring Training. Given the hurried circumstances, much of the usual downtime fun that this time of year produces, which is oftentimes portrayed to fans via social media, has been rather non-existent.

But on Sunday morning, just a couple of hours before Carlos Correa was set to make his Twins debut, we got a little taste of lost spring time fun. Players (in full uniform) got in front of a camera one-by-one and were asked to pronounce the Minnesota town of “Mahtomedi”. What happened next was contenting magic.

Mahtomedi is a north-eastern suburb of St. Paul and has a population of just over 8,000 people. According to Wikipedia, it’s name is Dakota (Native American) for “White Bear Lake”. That makes sense because Mahtomedi sits on White Bear Lake.

But “White Bear Lake” is also the name of Mahtomedi’s neighbor town. So two towns named “White Bear Lake” actually sit on “White Bear Lake”. One of them is just said in a different language. Damn…
