The Minnesota Twins designated Simeon Woods Richardson for assignment back on May 30, which triggered a series of events behind the scenes where GM Jeremy Zoll and Tom Pohlad (assumedly) got seven days to either trade, waive or outright release the 25-year-old right-handed starter.

It took five days for the Twins front office to come to terms on a deal that will send him to the Toronto Blue Jays, who will send “cash considerations” (essentially nothing) to Minnesota in order to jump the waiver wire line that probably had at least a couple of teams standing in it.

It’s quite a fall from grace for Woods Richardson originally came to the MN Twins back in 2021, via trade with, surprise… the Toronto Blue Jays. He, along with Austin Martin, was the return then president of baseball operations Derek Falvey was able to get in exchange for Jose Berrios.

SWR made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins back in 2022, at age 21. Since then, he has thrown 302.1 big league innings, compiling a 4.64 ERA, 4.64 FIP and 1.389 WHIP, making for a 2.7 WAR in just over one full year of service time spread over five MLB season.

Unfortunately, none of them have been as bad as 2026. Before the former second round draft pick was DFA’d, Simeon Woods Richardson posted a 7.74 ERA (56 ERA+), 6.15 FIP and 1.888 WHIP to go with 26 strikeouts and 25 walks. Last year, he was much better, posting a 4.40 and 106 OPS+ in 111.1 innings.
