MN Twins Immediately Start With Scrap Heap Addition

This offseason has a chance to be a monumental one for the Minnesota Twins. No, they are not likely to reinvest any of the money from Carlos Correa’s salary dump, but how far they dial things back will be telling.

Derek Falvey is already searching for a new manager. Rocco Baldelli escapes the mess that the new guy could be walking into, and it seems his grass could be greener for it.

If the Pohlads want to truly rip the roster down to the studs, we could see a Metrodome-like payroll at Target Field in 2026. The first move of the offseason doesn’t bode well for those holding out hope.

Ryan Kreidler claimed by Minnesota Twins

Free agency isn’t open for major league additions while the postseason is still going. However, teams can make waiver claims as 40-man roster shuffling takes place. The Minnesota Twins jumped at an opportunity to do so on Wednesday.

When the Pittsburgh Pirates deem a player not worthy of being on their roster, it’s probably not someone you immediately want to jump at. When that player is Ryan Kreidler, he of a career .138/.208/.176 slash line, it’s even worse.

Kreidler was a 4th round pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2019. He debuted in 2022 with the Detroit Tigers, and has played in 89 major league games for them the past four seasons. Kreidler’s OPS+ is 11, meaning he is 89% worse than the average major league player.

The move might be more defensible if Kreidler had done something at Triple-A worthy of hope. Across 99 games at that level this season, he batted .238/.363/.389 with 109 strikeouts. He has utility in that he can stand at multiple positions, and he steals bases but only at a 75% success rate. The reality is that it’s tough to find anything that stands out as noteworthy in his profile.

As unfortunate as that is, it’s more telling that Minnesota used a 40-man roster spot to claim him. Of course that doesn’t mean he will make it through the offseason, or to Opening Day, but the message is a bad one.

Kreidler is a minimum-salaried player that belongs nowhere near the big leagues and the Twins went out of their way to make sure he wound up in their organization for the time being. The darkness comes before the light, and it’s getting dark early.
