Not So Fast… Joe Mauer’s Dad Wants Him to Keep Playing

After what seemed like a send-off that can’t be matched and some hints from those “in the know”, a Joe Mauer retirement announcement has seemed imminent in the early days of this week. But in a subtle little quote, that was then written into the Star Tribune this morning, Joe Mauer’s father (Jake) may be trying to shift the narrative.

We all learned at a young age, that your “father knows best”. Hopefully, Joe Mauer listens to his dad and gives it another go. The guy is only 35 and the Twins could use his at-bats, defense, and clubhouse presence for what most expect to be another young team next season.

There is a lot of Joe Mauer hate that rules Twins Territory. Fans around the state feel the need to blame the Twins’ win/loss record over the last decade on the guy who made the most money during that time.

Joe Mauer deserves very little blame, when it comes to how the Twins have fared over the last decade. And though he won’t fully admit it, I point to Joe’s concussion history, when discussing most of his deficiencies since signing his massive deal after his MVP 2009 season. Let’s be clear. The Twins spent plenty of money outside of Joe Mauer in the past decade. The problem has been who they spent that money on.

Bill Smith swung for the fences and missing badly back in 2011 but the problems didn’t stop there. Once an approach hailed by many around the MLB, the Twins lost small-town spark over the last decade and every deal they’ve made seemed to eventually fall on it’s face. Guy’s who left became stars and the one’s who came in wound up as disappointments.

That’s a blog for another day… But, the deal Joe signed was the least of our problems.

Twins get a NEW “AA” Affiliate:

The Twins lost their AA affiliate in Chattanooga to the Cincinnati Reds, so they turned around and signed a two-year agreement with Cincinnati’s previous minor league team, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
