The Minnesota Twins are not expected to do a lot of moving and grooving in free agency this offseason, after they cut their player payroll from $160 million to $130 million last offseason. Instead, they’re likely to be active on the trade market.

But don’t tell that to MLB Network host Greg Amsinger, who has the Twins making one of the biggest free agency splashes in team history this winter. According to Amsinger’s, free agent predictions segment, the Minnesota Twins will become the new home of one of the top starters on the market, this offseason, 31-year-old Blake Snell.

Would Blake Snell be a good fit with Minnesota Twins?

Blake Snell is a 9-year MLB veteran with over 1,000 innings pitched in his career. How good is he? Pablo Lopez is a really good pitcher, but he’d slide down to the Twins’ 2nd rotation slot, without asking a single question. Snell has two Cy Youngs, his most recent coming in 2023, with the San Diego Padres.

Originally drafted No 52 overall by the Tampa Bay Rays, Blake Snell made his MLB debut in 2016, at the age of 23. He won his first Cy Young just two seasons later, at 25-years-old. Snell has a 3.19 career ERA (128 ERA+) and a 3.35 FIP.

His 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings during his career (so far) is the best in MLB history, according to Baseball Reference. After winning his 2nd Cy Young in 2023, Blake dealt with injuries in 2024, but still posted a 3.12 ERA and 2.43 FIP, in 104 innings pitched.

Could Snell to the Twins really happen?

In other words, if you are a Minnesota Twins fan, you should go to sleep tonight praying that Greg Amsinger had the right birdie whisper this prediction into his ear today. It would change everything about where the Twins 2025 season is projected to go.

But… don’t get your hopes up. According to The Athletic, Blake Snell is going to cost his next team 3 years, $105 million. That’s Carlos Correa money. So, unless the Twins plan on offloading Correa, which isn’t impossible, then I do not see how Snell finds his way here.

And if, say, they were to move Carlos Correa, I’m not sure why a high-priority free agent pitcher would entertain signing in Minnesota… given how unserious they would have proven themselves. The most likely candidates, according to Ken Rosenthal (The Athletic), include the Red Sox, Dodgers, Orioles, Blue Jays and Giants.
