Angels Hire Former MN Twins All-Star as Manager

The Minnesota Twins are currently in the midst of a managerial search as Derek Falvey looks to find a replacement for fired Rocco Baldelli. That list great on Monday with former Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais being named as a candidate.
Thus far the Twins have not made contact with anyone from the Los Angeles Angels. That’s a bit surprising given the stature that Torii Hunter holds in the organization. Still, the Angels have been on a hunt of their own, and the guy they went with is none other than a former Twins All-Star.
Kurt Suzuki tabbed as next Los Angeles Angels manager
Los Angeles seemed to be zeroing in on future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols for their open managerial position. They also considered special assistant Torii Hunter. In the end, Jon Heyman is reporting that Kurt Suzuki has been hired.

Suzuki has been a special assistant to general manager Perry Minasian for the past three seasons. He also played for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021-22. Like both Pujols and Hunter, he has no previous managerial experience.
Joe Maddon, former Angels manager, recently talked about his next landing spot and not wanting to go somewhere the front office expects a manager to simply be a puppet. He spoke on the desire for organizations to find green candidates that are willing to simply be a mouthpiece in the dugout. That’s interesting considering he left Los Angeles, and the description winds up being exactly what they hired.
Suzuki spent three seasons with the Twins, playing for Minnesota from 2014-2016. He made his only All-Star Game during his first season with the Twins, and caught the final out at Target Field from teammate Glen Perkins during the contest.

Over the course of a 16-year career, Suzuki was a reliable catcher and well-respected in the clubhouse. At 42 years old, he should have a level of relatability for players in the clubhouse as well. It remains to be seen how much of his playing personality will translate to the manager’s office.
Minnesota is still seeking their answer for the manager position. Expectations should remain that an announcement will be made this month.
